Richard Abbott works for a major bank in England in the IT department. Luckily his job doesn’t require him to fly anywhere because he is absolutely terrified of flying, not scared of flying but gut wrenching terror! That is until the day he gets promoted to Team Leader, of a project he has spent the last three years working on. Now, they expect him to fly to Chicago for a kick-off meeting! He’s stuck between a rock and a hard place on the one hand, the promotion and everything that goes with it, the other hand, the abject terror at the mere thought of flying! There was only one person Richard has ever told about his biggest fear, his best friend from uni, Theo. It was time to get help. Richard decided to he had to talk to Theo and he definitely needed a beer. Over a few beers and lots of discussion Theo helped Richard pick the right “Flying with Confidence” course. Two weeks later and Richard is all set to participate in the course so that he can fly to Chicago, attend the meeting and fly home! Richard can’t believe how well the course worked! He’s already been on a short flight, he survived the short flight and Richard now has the tools to survive a major flight like the one to Chicago!!
Camden Marsh is a Life Coach who doesn’t exactly relish flying but he does it. As it happens Camden is scheduled to fly to Chicago for the annual conference run by the International coach Federation. As luck would have it Camden and Richard are seated next to each other on the plane. Camden noticed right away how nervous his flight partner was, he decided the best way to get the man to relax and get past his nerves was to start talking. The more they talk the more Camden realises just how good looking Richard is and just how much he really does want to get to know him better.
Both Camden and Richard are so involved in their discussion about their respective lives that before they knew it they were taxiing down the runway. They weren’t in the air long before they hit “turbulence”. Richards worst nightmare is about to come to life and there’s not a thing he can do about it. Damn, he didn’t even get to kiss Camden! When he woke up next Richard was in a hospital, in a lot of pain but he didn’t have a broken bone anywhere. After hours of interviews with investigators and police Richard was exhausted plus nobody will give him any information about Camden! By the time Theo arrived Richard had all but convinced himself that his aviophobic feelings were right after all. Richard tried to talk to Theo about the crash but every time the memories came back he stated shaking so he told Theo all about Camden. The best thing Theo did for Richard was finding out which room Camden was in.
Two days after the crash and Camden was feeling very lucky. After surgery on a broken leg he became paralysed below the waist, thank god that was only temporary. The one good thing to happen was Richard turned up in his hospital room. Camden was so relieved that Richard had made it out alive. As they were talking they found that Camden was allowed out of hospital but he couldn’t leave because he had no-one to look after him. Richard couldn’t believe his luck, he decided to take a chance and go home with Camden to look after him. They were both just so happy to be alive. Camden tells Richard that they’re both going to have to talk to a psychiatrist so they don’t end up with any lasting emotional baggage.
When they got back to Camden’s place Richard found out how little his boss thought of him and his need to recover from a plane crash. He realised it was going to take him a lot longer to recover from the crash than he had originally thought! Whilst both men were recovering they realised the attraction they had felt on the plane was real and they were going to explore it. As they got closer Richard realised that his job was not exactly what he wanted to do especially since his discovery of what his boss is truly like. Both Camden and Richard realised they were falling in love and it was ok! They were helping each other with their nightmares and other anxieties that needed to be dealt with. The first thing Richard did was tell Theo that his life had turned upside down since the crash and he couldn’t be happier, Theo talked everything out with him and honestly Richard was over the moon. It takes nearly two months and an incredible amount of counselling after the crash before either man is ready to even contemplate getting on another airplane.
All in all, Aviophobia is well written addition to the Flight HA1710 series. This book takes an in-depth look into aviophobia and the resulting damage that is done not only to the person suffering from it but their family and friends. I have no hesitation in recommending this book to all m/m romance lovers.

Aviophobia by Serena Yates is book 5 in the Flight HA1710 series which shows how one traumatic event affects the various people caught up in it. The series spans six books, all written by different authors.

Richard Abbott has spent years avoiding flying, he has Aviophobia which means he is terrified of even setting foot inside an airplane. His job as an IT project officer doesn’t involve travel so its never been an issue until his latest project brings him to the attention of senior management, who promote him. Unfortunately his new role involves frequent overseas travel so he will have to fly. Suddenly Richard is faced with a stark choice, cope with flying or leave his job.

With the help of his best friend Theo Richard attends a one day course to help him overcome his phobia. All going well on the course Richard then plans for his first overseas trip, a transatlantic flight to Chicago. On the plane Richard is seated next to lifestyle coach Camden Marsh. The two men start up a conversation which helps to pass away the hour delay on the tarmac. The two men like each other a lot but before they can get too comfortable or even exchange phone numbers, the plane lurches suddenly and all hell breaks loose. Richard’s worst nightmare is coming true; the plane is going to crash.

I really enjoyed Aviophobia. It’s a sweet rather cute story without too much angst considering the subject matter. Both Richard and Camden are nice guys who develop a bond before the crash, one that’s intensified by their lucky escape. Richard moves in with Camden after their release from hospital as Camden shouldn’t be on his own and together they give each other the strength they need to come to terms with what happened. The accident gives both men a new perspective on life and their relationship develops quickly as a result.

Richard does have some hurdles to overcome at work when his boss shows a stark lack of empathy and understanding, and quite a nasty attitude, but with Camden’s help Richard is able to decide what he wants to do and move forward. Aviophobia is a nice addition to the Flight HA1710 Series. I liked how we got to see more about how the accident happened but its still a mystery as to what caused it. I wonder if the last book in the series, Fracture by Amber Kell, will reveal all.

Aviophobia by Serena Yates was a nice addition to the Flight HA 1710 series. This book is a standalone and need not be read in conjunction with the other books. Richard suffers from aviophobia yet he must fly transcontinental to Chicago for business. On the flight he meets Camden, a life coach by profession. The men begin to talk awaiting the take-off delay and Richard opens up about his fears—Camden sympathetic to his condition. Unfortunately Richard’s fears come to fruition when the flight crashes in Ireland. After a few days in the hospital the two men are discharged and elect to stay together for convenience and friendship.

I enjoyed Ms. Yates portrayal of Richard’s and Camden’s personalities. The insta-connection was born out of a traumatic bonding which soon melded into care and love.

Although the aviophobia was explained and Richard fought through it, the deep-seated explanation of his condition was never divulged or eluded to.

Additionally, I would have liked to see more of Camden’s life coach skills utilized. The synopsis led me to believe that facet would be an integral part of the story but sadly I found it lacking.

None-the-less, a nice story with lovely characters.

A MUST HAVE for any 40K fan

This is one of the best graphic novels I have ever read for the warhammer 40,000 genre. The story is amazing and the characters are awesome as they are memorable. The art approach is just as spectacular from the armor of the space marines to the insanity of the worlds of Chaos within the Eye of Terror.

This was in fair condition and is a good Novelette or illustrated novel. The reading is light and somewhat duplicative of other adventures before. But is still an interesting read.

An interesting set of case studies and application of patterns in TDD (title is somewhat misleading)

I evaluated this book for my graduate class on advanced software design. I'm still ambivalent about making it a required text.

Strengths: Code examples in Java. Interesting reasoning of applying patterns, especially with respect to variability (a dimension I find is often minimized in many texts). Addresses iterative development with testing, with real examples and detailed analyses of risks. There are exercises, which are useful in a course environment. The reasoning for applying patterns (or not) is quite detailed. The projects (pay station software development) are realistic, although the problem domain might be more suited for people familiar with these devices (in Denmark). The Figure 1 in the "Tour of the book" gives a great map of the case studies, patterns, etc. It's easy to go to specific applications of patterns (the book is quite modular).

Weaknesses: When I compare its price to other books on Agile Design and OOD patterns (e.g. Craig Larman's UML 2 and Patterns from 2005), this book is overpriced (almost double the price). There's an eBook option (Kindle) but it's the same price as the hard cover (that doesn't encourage sustainable development). The author introduces a 3-2-1 method that is actually a new name for an old thing. He makes no reference to Protected Variations coined by Larman (which is the same as the 3-2) or Indirection (which is the 1), but oddly cites Larman on a less-important coining of "Don't talk to strangers" for the Law of Demeter pattern. Variability is a big part of this book, but I feel the author doesn't do a good job of showing who else contributed along these lines. The text refers to "stories" from XP, but there's little guidance on how to write stories (despite Agile being in the title). Reliability is also exagerrated. It's defined (borrowed from ISO 9126) but mostly this books is based on writing code that is bug-free via Test-Driven Development in Agile (good material, but not sufficient for true reliability). Reliability also concerns dealing with failures in the software that occur because of environmental problems, for example. This book is not about fault tolerance, even though Reliability in the title might imply it. Again, books such as Larman's address fault tolerance specifically and discuss patterns for achieving it through redundancy.

Good textbook for Hands-on Applications Programming class

I used this textbook for an upperclass Applications Programming course with approximately 15 students. The students and I enjoyed the book and found the material engaging, understandable, and helpful for developing good programming practices. The book is a good fit for a course which builds on previous courses in programming, data structures, and algorithms. It teaches students Test Driven Development, Design Patterns, and Software Lifecycle topics in the context of a significant hands-on programming project. It is well-suited to a team-oriented approach, and fits nicely into a series of two-week iterations in a 15 week semester, so students get a feel for an Agile Software Development process. The online Teacher Resources are very useful and useable, and include Lecture Slides, code examples, and suggestions for how the material should be used in several course formats.

Beautiful and informative!

I believe this book is intended to be a more educational resource book for those in the architectural field, but it is delightful for the novice who just appreciates great design!! Beautiful to look at as well as enjoyable to read through. Bell offers her readers the opportunity to visit projects all around the world from the comfort of their armchairs, with informative and easy-to-navigate information explaining the materials behind the projects.

Can be better

This book seemed to me to be a good start, but maybe was rushed to production. There are a number of significant issues with this publication:
* Poorly organized - rather than taking you through a step-by-step process for each important phase of mold making and slip casting, the information is scattered throughout. Including information on other artists adds to the value of this book, but detracts from fundamental goal of teaching you how to slip cast.
* Missing/minimized information - 'Begin with the water and .25 percent of sodium silicate.' How the heck do you get to .25 percent sodium silicate? Does it come only in liquid form, or is there a powder available? Is the liquid form measured by volume or weight? Is the liquid considered 100%, or is it diluted? The tile-making example looked really cool. But two whole paragraphs on the silly fill tubes? And nothing after pouring the slip into the mold. How long to wait? How do you remove the tile after you open the mold? What if the tile doesn't want to come out? And (on page 68) "Mix the Hydrocal and pour it into the frame." Ok - nothing - nothing about mixing Hydrocal. How much water? How long to wait? Is it the same as #1 Plaster? Also (page 19) "Then sand the whole exterior...Sand the interior surfaces as well..." Huh? Why do that? Is it optional, or a key step to getting a successful cast? Also, how long do you dry the molds before you can use them? It's a mystery....
* Instructions don't work - I followed the mixing and pouring of plaster and slip down to the last available detail, including the cone 7 Hensley/Polseno recipe. The casts won't come out of the molds. From Troubleshooting, suggests the mold is too wet (how long do you let the things dry?) or too much EPK, but I used the recipe in the book!

This is a well written book that is easy to understand and comprehend

Wow... I have read the negative reviews. All I can say is re-read the book the information is there, and if it is not there he tells you where to find it. This is a well written book that is easy to understand and comprehend. The book is more so about a quick way to make prototype molds using Andrew's unique speedy technique, and how to make lid's that will fit well. He covers the basics well, pointing out along the way the most important things you need to do to ovoid common mistakes before they happen. He gives you just about every possible mold making scenario from 1piece molds to 6 piece molds.
The two things that would make this a better book. #1 Certain techniques in the book are not regurgitated. "Wash off the mold soap with vinegar." These seven words are just easier to print than; "Refer to page bla bla on how to wash away mold soap." #2 It almost seems like a few pictures are missing, while some of the other pictures that were included are pointless. I would have been a good idea to give this book to the targeted novice mold maker for a prerelease review.
Overall I do love the book and I find myself referencing this book again and again.

I'm jumping all over this book just to read it. One of my questions was the best way to make a pour hole. Second question I want to make a mold of another ceramic piece. How to I make a pour hole and can I use another ceramic piece to make a mold? Can't find it in the book....

About the Author
James R. Evans is professor in the Department of Operations, Business Analytics, and Information Systems in the Lindner College of Business at the University of Cincinnati. His service includes president of the Decision Sciences Institute 1997-1998 and 11 years on the Board of Examiners and Panel of Judges for the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award. He has been Editor of the Quality Management Journal, published by the American Society for Quality, and served on editorial boards of numerous other journals. Dr. Evans has published more than 90 refereed papers and more than 30 editions of books. During the annual Quality Congress in May 2004, The American Society for Quality presented Dr. Evans and co-author Bill Lindsay with the Philip B. Crosby Medal for writing THE MANAGEMENT AND CONTROL OF QUALITY, 6E. The Crosby medal was presented "for authoring a distinguished book contributing significantly to the extension of the philosophy and application of the principles, methods, and techniques of quality management."

William M. Lindsay is Professor Emeritus of Management at Northern Kentucky University. He received a BSIE from the Georgia Institute of Technology, MS in Engineering from the University of Cincinnati, and an MBA and Ph.D. from Georgia State University. In addition to coauthoring eight editions of MANAGING FOR QUALITY AND PERFORMANCE EXCELLENCE (including predecessors), he is the coauthor of Total Quality and Organization Development. He served as an examiner for the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award for four years, as a judge for the Kentucky Quality Award for five years, and as a judge for the Seasongood Innovation Awards for the City of Cincinnati for three years. He is a senior member and past President of the Cincinnati Chapter of the Institute of Industrial Engineers, past President of the Cincinnati Chapter of the Association for Quality and Participation, and is a member of the American Society for Quality (ASQ), in addition to other professional organizations. He continues to teach MBA courses in quality management and project management. He is currently a Board Member of CLASP, a local nonprofit after-school program for elementary-aged children, and is an active volunteer at his church.

A Great Textbook--Thumbs up!

After reading this book, and studying the various applications used in the study of statistical analysis of quality control; it has facilitated my understanding of the subject beyond my horizon. I highly recommend this textbook for students as well as those who value the importance in the management of quality control.

I really enjoyed reading this book I thought it was cute and funny. Characters and story was interesting but hay it's Vegas so anything can happen. I totally enjoyed reading this book, and would recommend it, it's a good read.

Reading while on the throne. . . and the thoughts that come

Awesome book. Every household with a bathroom where there's a reader who visits... Well, this is a perfect book to add to your decor, an item to be used when paying a visit to the WC. A friend of mine loaned this book to me back when it was first published. Julie L. Horan was a flight attendant who flew all over the world. Of course, where ever she went, there were toilets there to use. Thus, began her curiosity. Book is full of interesting tidbits about this place and that, times being the ancient and the modern.

"Porcelain God" has lots of minute details that you'll really want to know about one of our most frequently used tools. Without the toilet in the house, our backyards would be quite unsightly and unsanitary. In fact, I've always wondered how one can be allowed to build something without a toilet, a sewer and a way for it to be composted... Well, thus, we have nuclear power plants, but then that's another whole tale, did you get it? No storage for the waste... Back to the "The Porcelain God: A Social History of the Toilet".

Believe me, if you've never been curious about how we got toilets, then you're not really a deep thinker. This book has all the answers to your questions, presented in an entertaining fashion and told by a woman who just couldn't seem to get enough information about her subject.

Here's one thing that book did to me: It made me begin to shut the lid on my toilet after every use. I tell people it's because in an earthquake I don't want all the items above the toilet on a shelf to fall into the tank, actually true. If things come back to life after the quake, the last thing you want to be doing is shopping for a toilet with everyone else. No, it's the info she gives you about how high the water rises up above and how long that continues after you've flushed the toilet. Not something I'd ever pondered before her book.

The two plus two equals four here is: If you allow the water spray from the toilet to come back into your room, then how sanitary is the air in your bathroom? Hmmm... something to ponder... deeply... Yes, I'll recommend this book to every one. In fact, I just purchased a copy of this book for a family member who I know is about to do some travels. Thought it would be a good time to begin learning about the toilets of the world... and what the water spray really means to them.

I meant to mention that this book is one of my favorite history books. The writer has a clear style with humorous overtones ~ after all, look at her chosen subject. She takes you all over the world and all through the ages in an entertaining fashion. So, if you're looking for a good read with real facts presented in an easy to read format, here's a book you should not pass up.
