Excellent study guide!

The No-Nonsense Series of books is an excellent way to prepare for the Ham License Exams - I read the technician and the general license study guides and then practiced a lot on HamStudy.org, both single sections and practice exams, and passed my technician and my general license exams with flying colors. Make no mistake about it: this is not an in-depth technical manual, nor does it claim to be, it is a study guide for the tests only.
But Romanchik puts the questions in a very easy to follow prose and in context, which helps enormously to both understand and remember the material. Moreover, this guide shines in explaining formulae in a way that makes working with them easy.
By contrast, the ARRL books are overwhelming with details, especially for beginners, and much better suited as reference works. And though Gordon West produces an excellent series of study guides, I found his style too chatty, and I never could sit down and read his book cover to cover. Romanchik's direct approach, on the other hand, worked well for me.
All in all I would highly recommend the No-Nonsense Study Guides for getting your amateur license. And remember: the license is only the first step, afterwards it is important to find a nice group of hams to join, learn from and share with!

Disappointing

The explanations in this book are no more detailed or useful than what you can fin for free on the Internet or in an app. I expected more details and teaching around the questions, not just a a couple sentences which don't really provide enough education. If you want teaching, buy the AARL book. If you just want a minimal explanation of the question, you can skip this book and just use the hamstudy.org flashcards with the simple explanations on the back.

Good for passing, light on theory

So after you pass your Technician Class exam you may think about taking the General Class exam, since that license opens up a great portion of the HF bands (you know, what grandma and grandpa called "shortwave radio"). This book zeroes-in on the questions and answers using a textbook-like narrative, but is kind of light on the theory. But by studying this book and committing the answers to memory, you'll have a good chance of passing, which is exactly the purpose of this book. However, after you pass, you may want to get a different book to fill in the blanks and get the big picture: there's more to power supplies than filter networks, bleeding resistors, and lightweight inductors and capacitors to smooth out the pulses (these are all approximate answers to General exam questions). To delve in deeper, I recommend the The ARRL General Class License Manual (emphasis on Manual). Of course, this book is about 4X longer and it would be a bear to study from unless you want to commit six months to the effort.
As always, pick your VE location and date first, then work backwards to see how long you need to study. This hard deadline will help motivate you and keep you on track. I spent about 20 minutes a day (about 60 minutes on Sat/Sun) for 30 days reading and re-reading the book, about twice as long as I spent on the Technician exam since the material is far more obscure and disconnected (although it builds on the Technician material). Full-wave rectifier? Control grid? Maximum deviation of an oscillator? Varicode? PM? Obscure indeed. But that's why you need a study guide.
