Nice diagrams and pictures

I've always wanted to learn how to play the piano. This book not only teaches basic notes and scales but technique as well. It has nice diagrams and pictures to make learning much easier. It is very simple and has a nice step by step approach to teaching. I like that it has YouTube videos to accompany the book. It's great for the visual learner!

Thorough, yet easy

Not only does this book teach you technique and form, but also helps get that muscle memory moving by taking you deep into the pianist's mind. An example, shared quite early on in the book tells the beginner to not only play the simple three note exercise with their right hand, but to say the note names as they play as well. Incredibly simple, but also incredibly effective.

While the book is easy enough to follow along with - provided YOU have the desire and drive to learn - I must say the best part about this release is the related free video lessons on the YouTube channel. As long as you have an internet connection, you have a digital piano teacher to assure you along the way. Other books may have more detailed writing, trying to explain how to position your fingers to play a certain scale, but actually seeing it done on your computer screen is a godsend.

Overall, for the the price, and including the free video lessons, I believe this is one of the best beginner piano books out there. Now it is up to YOU to become the pianist you've always dreamt of.

It will get you playing

If you want to learn proper theory and technique then this is the piano book to get. As a piano teacher, it is nice to come across a book that covers this from the beginning to advanced levels. This is important even for the casual player. It improves performance and minimizes the chance of a hand injury. You don't want to stress the hands. If you are trying to teach yourself, check out the accompanying youtube videos.

The ebook is quite handy. Next time one of my students forget their books, I'll just pull this up on my phone! The instructions and pictures are easy to follow. I will be supplementing this to the current books I teach from. This book doesn't have songs in it. That's a good thing. Many songs in lesson books tend to be outdated. Not everyone likes that. Following this book, you'll be able to jam to your fav tunes in no time, and hopefully make up some of your own.

About the Author

Laura E. Berk is a distinguished professor of psychology at Illinois State University, where she has taught human development to both undergraduate and graduate students for more than three decades. She received her bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of California, Berkeley, and her master’s and doctoral degrees in child development and educational psychology from the University of Chicago.  She has been a visiting scholar at Cornell University, UCLA, Stanford University, and the University of South Australia.

 

    Berk has published widely on the effects of school environments on children’s development, the development of private speech, and the role of make-believe play in development. Her research has been funded by the U.S. Office of Education and the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development. It has appeared in many prominent journals, including Child Development, Developmental Psychology, Merrill-Palmer Quarterly, Journal of Abnormal Child Psychology, Development and Psychopathology, and Early Childhood Research Quarterly. Her empirical studies have attracted the attention of the general public, leading to contributions to Psychology Today and Scientific American.  She has also been featured on National Public Radio’s Morning Edition and in Parents Magazine, Wondertime, and Reader’s Digest.

 

    Berk has served as a research editor for Young Children and a consulting editor for Early Childhood Research Quarterly. Currently, she is an associate editor for the Journal of Cognitive Education and Psychology. She is a frequent contributor to edited volumes on early childhood development, having recently authored chapters on the importance of parenting, on make-believe play and self-regulation, and on the kindergarten child. She has also written the article on social development for The Child: An Encyclopedic Companion; the article on Vygotsky for the Encyclopedia of Cognitive Science; and the chapter on storytelling as a teaching strategy for Voices of Experience: Memorable Talks from the National Institute on the Teaching of Psychology (Association for Psychological Science).  She is the coauthor of the forthcoming chapter on make-believe play and self-regulation in the Sage Handbook of Play in Early Childhood.

 

    Berk’s books include Private Speech: From Social Interaction to Self-Regulation; Scaffolding Children’s Learning: Vygotsky and Early Childhood Education; Landscapes of Development: An Anthology of Readings; and A Mandate for Playful Learning in Preschool: Presenting the Evidence. In addition to Exploring Lifespan Development, she is author of the best-selling texts Child Development and Infants, Children, and Adolescents, and Development Through the Lifespan published by Pearson. Her book for parents and teachers is Awakening Children’s Minds: How Parents and Teachers Can Make a Difference.

 

    Berk is active in work for children’s causes. In addition to service in her home community, she is a member of the national board of directors and chair of the Chicago advisory board of Jumpstart, a nonprofit organization that provides intensive literacy intervention to thousands of low-income preschoolers across the United States, using college and university students as interveners. Berk is a fellow of the American Psychological Association, Division 7: Developmental Psychology.

This book retired last semester and no one told it!

This book is a disaster! Too late to send back though. Forced to limp through the semester with a book that should have been put out of it's misery. Paperback binding is almost kaput! The covers are creased, tearing, loose....not even an extra cover will save it. Dog ears everywhere! Marks, loose pages, odd folds.....previous renter must have folded it back like a magazine and then used it as a pillow!

Decent text

This is a fairly decent text for human development. Each age group explores physical, emotional and mental development using some widely acknowledged theories such as Vygotsky and Piaget. Each is broken down to a level that is easily comprehensible even for someone who has not taken previous psychology courses. My main complaint is that the author also uses the book as her personal soapbox and expresses her personal views as fact. She seems to be pretty liberal in most things so if you're liberal you would probably have no issues with what she says. But, putting that aside, the book seems fairly decent for a beginning level college course.

Fantastic Book!

This book is great. The formatting and layout of this book is one of the best I have had. It is an easy read and very easy to follow; not like a lot of textbooks that seem to overcomplicate subject matter. Anyone taking a Human Development or Psychological Development class would find this book irreplaceable. I rented this book, but found it so usefule that I am currently looking to buy it as it provides information that is useful in so many other psychology classes.

One of the Best of 2011

This is Larkin Rose's fifth novel. In this book, she introduces the reader to fashion designer Eve Harris, a driven workaholic at the top of the fashion ladder with no time for dating and romance. She gets physical relief using a British phone sex operator named Lexi.

Also introduced is Jodi Connelly, a very successful paid escort who was once a phone sex operator but has pared her phone sex client list down to a special three, one of whom is Eve.

Both women are obsessed with the other without ever having met in person and neither has any interest in meeting in person because they are certain they will be disappointed with reality. The chances of meeting are slim to none because Eve lives in New York City and Jody lives in London. Little do they know that they would, indeed, meet. Neither could possibly foretell the cataclysmic effects their meeting will have on their carefully controlled lives.

Rose has written a book that no reader will be able to easily put down. This is a tightly woven story so well written that there's not single misstep. From start to finish, the story moves quickly forward. In the hands of a lesser writer, this story could very well have become trite. Larkin's sure hand makes this a compelling story of two women looking for the same thing.

There is one caveat, though. The intimate meetings between Eve and Jody are explicit. If you prefer the details of sexual meetings to be hinted at rather then drawn in vivid detail, this is not the book for you.

Ridiculous... but fun

So this is the kind of book you don’t want to get caught reading.

Random stranger on BART: “Oh, that book looks fun, what’s it about?”

Me: “Um… it’s a romance... about a woman in love with a phone sex operator.”

No. Seriously… No. I’m not explaining that to anybody. It’s like a Ho-Ho. Those damn things are delicious. But you don’t want anyone to see you eat it.

So this book was fun. I think it’s the fluffiest book I’ve ever read, but it’s still fun. Nothing more.

This is the first book I've read by Larkin Rose and I was so satisfied (very much so), I've read all the rest.

The chemistry between these two women is electric! One has a secret which will be her undoing, but can that be changed? Their relationship is much more complex than I would expect from a matinee romance novel. I loved hearing Jodi's continuous inner monologue which presents a completely different woman than the hardened, cool escort that she presents to the world.

Let's just get it out of the way: The Sex scenes are as HOT as they get. If you are looking for a quick, erotic read then you can't go wrong with this.

Definitely A Keeper!

This has got to be one of my favorite, if not the favorite, textbooks of all-time! I did not appreciate the cost, even for rental, but the text is jam-packed with valuable information for the budding entrepreneur! Don't plan on returning this book if you are planning on becoming a business owner. Do yourself a favor and purchase it!

A comprehensive treatise in five volumes, Philosophy of the Masters is an English translation of the original two-volume Punjabi work, Gurmat Siddhant, written by Maharaj Sawan Singh. This volume discusses in great detail the spiritual discipline essential for following the path of God-realization. The author, a spiritual adept, was popularly known as the Great master. His exposition of the science of Sant Mat is based on his personal knowledge and inner experience. In order to reveal the universal character of this science, the concepts and principles elucidated in the book are supported by quotations from writings of mystics from different countries and backgrounds.

Philosophy of the Masters, written in simple but forceful language, has been very popular. The original has been translated into several of the main Indian languages. The English translation, first published in the 1960s has gone through several reprints and has also been translated into some other European languages. Readers interested in spirituality will find that this is a book to be studied, assimilated, and put into action.
