About the Author
Henrik Ibsen was born at Skien in Norway in 1828. He was one of the earliest writers to dramatise the individual's alienation from society. Although never fully appreciated during his lifetime, he has since come to be recognised as one of the greatest dramatists and the 'Father of Modern Drama'.

Difficult. Surreal.

Peer Gynt is a sort of folk tale character who we see go from being a young man to an old man and who gets in several different adventures. The play doesn't have much of a plot exactly. It starts of in a Norwegian village where Peer is a buffoonish character. He leaves the village, meets up with Trolls, gets in a shipwreck, wanders around the desert, and runs into the button moulder. All of this just happens, disconnectedly. He spends time in America also, but we aren't shown that.

There is a lot of talk about being your self, being authentic, etc. If the play has a theme, I am guessing that's it.

It's completely different from Ibsen's realistic works like An Enemy of the People or The Wild Duck. I'm more a fan of those works. Peer Gynt didn't really speak to me.

On a side note, in the movie Educating Rita, with Michael Caine, Rita takes a test where one of the questions was 'What are some of the difficulties in staging Peer Gynt?' A: It's long. It's not in prose. It has trolls and other fantastical creatures. It has a huge cast many of whom are only on stage very briefly. The main character goes from being a youth to a very old man. The settings vary from a Norwegian village to Egypt and the Sphinx. This is why it's rarely done on stage.

the emptiness of prodigality.

Often funny. Often bizarre. Always deep. Peer Gynt first appears to me as this self-centered youth who cares only for himself and the satisfaction of his impulses and whims at any cost. He is the quick non-thinker, who leaves a life of relative conventionality to roam as a dissolute wanderer. He is indeed all of these things, but all the while his "self" is not "centered". At the end of his adventures as a libertine, the grey-bearded Peer Gynt is at a cross-roads, and he asks the character of the Button Moulder this question: "What, after all, is this being one's self?" The Button Moulder replies that being one's self means slaying one's Self, and furthermore "observing the Master's intentions in all things." Peer Gynt contemplates this... restraint and delayed gratification have never been manageable themes with him. In my opinion, this whole idea of the search for the "self" is what Peer Gynt is all about. At the very final crossroads he is redeemed by the undeserved forgiveness and love of Solvieg, the woman he has once abandoned... this scene being a beautiful picture of the grace and love of God that is available to the Peer Gynt in every reader.
Ibsen originally wrote Peer Gynt as a poem, and therefore we lose the Norwegian rhyme and metre in any English translation. To compensate if at all possible, I suggest reading the play while listening to the incidental music of Edvard Grieg, specifically composed to accompany the live performance of Peer Gynt. (Note: My review is based on the translation by Peter Watts).

The Charm of a Trickster...

Peer Gynt is a piece of literature that, like Goethe's Faust Part II plays best on the stage of the imagination. It is too lengthy and costly to be performed on stage. Sometimes the first three acts are performed together, sometimes the last two acts are brought together to become a whole for a theatre production.

In terms of reading, this is a great fable piece. Peer is the Trickster with the mirror to his conscience. As a youth, he is Troll-like in his lusts, in his carousing. In his middle-age, he is Troll-like in his financial enterprises. At the end of his life, he is a folorn man, having given up possible true love to run around in search of his self. He is a fraud but we feel sympathy for him. He pursues life in search of distractions and power but ends up empty at the end, soon to be the vicim of the Button Moulder, soon to be nothing more than a button.

This work has many levels and open to numerous interpretations. Ideally, this is the book you read for a book club. There is nothing conventional about it. The conversations will be endless and the philosophy inspired, well, might be inspiring.

Good book at an excellent price and fast delivery, but a newer edition is out.

It's exactly what I expected; I have earlier editions that I use frequently. It was at a good price and was delivered quickly. Supposedly, there was some use and/or damage, but it looks in brand-new condition to me. My only reason for giving it four stars rather than five is that an even newer version came out earlier this year, and there was no mention that this was no longer the latest edition.

The annual one-day conference at St Bride Library in Bride Lane (off Fleet Street) has become a popular fixture in London's graphic calendar, tackling themes such as magazine design and (most recently, in January 2010) music. The Form of the Book Book is a modest record and souvenir of the 2009 event.

Each talk is a chapter, and most work well on the page. There's a scholarly account of Le Corbusier as book designer, and a memoir of working with Herbert Spencer in the 1970s from Chrissie Charlton (above right). Armand Mevis's 'Every Book Starts with an Idea' is more preface than complete piece, and an interview with Bob Stein (about the future of the book) is a little opaque. The most rewarding chapters are by Richard Hollis and James Goggin.

Hollis's 'Ways of Seeing Books' begins with Gyorgy Kepes's views on the use of the book. After a brief swipe at Bruce Mau and Phaidon, he describes his manner of working with John Berger on G. before berating Penguin for their treatment of the reissue of his innovative, still radical book design for Berger's Ways of Seeing.

Goggin's 'The Matta-Clark Complex' is a good-humoured critique of the temptations that await the unwary (or over-ambitious) designer. This 'Complex' denotes the way designers create books whose form apes and competes with the content. Art books about the late Gordon Matta-Clark, known for his 'building cuts', make ideal case studies. Goggin's thoughtful conclusions demonstrate why he is one of the most interesting designers of his generation.

Non-native speaker approaching fluency

This book was perfect for what I needed. I have a good working knowledge of Spanish except I have had a hard time finding instruction on Veterinary Terminology in Spanish. This book has common phrases used in everyday veterinary practice that I need to understand to do fill-in work in Puerto Rico.

Just right for my requirements!

It was just the "supplemental" that I needed to go with the RosettaStone software I'm using. That program is totally "intuitive" & uses NO English. This had just the right amount of crucial common verbs, nouns & pronoun forms, key phrases for work use. It states that it's not intended to be a complete language instruction booklet, but does a nice job of "the necessary"!

This book is a good refresher. I would not recommend if you don't know any spanish. It is aimed at Large animal but the concepts can easily be used throughout.

500 years into the future Earth has drastic problems. Another few years and she was be considered uninhabitable. Help comes in the form of an alien race known as the Atblorians.

Unfortunately, she is forced to go with the man named Adike and must live with him until other arrangements can be made. But, and invading enemy known as the Wealhex have set their targets on Atblora and the one man she wants to get to know so desperately.

Adike is a retired Atblorian soldier. Retired only because he was forced by the council after his near death on a small planet that cost the lives of many of his men. Summoned to pick up a package, Adike realizes he has been fooled into taking an unwanted mate. He does his best to let her know he doesn't want her and that she wouldn't be staying for long at his home. His plans go wrong when the Wealhex attack his planet, sending him and Matilda on a run for their lives. They have to get to the Docking Bay so Adike can join in the fight to rid Atblora of the enemy. Adike lives with the guilt of his soldiers' deaths and blames himself for surviving. Can Matilda help him see the error of his ways and heal him?

Along the way, the pair will fight to survive and get to know each other better. Feelings will change as they depend on each other more and more.

Could've Been Really Good With A Decent Editor...

The basic storyline is actually pretty interesting and would have grabbed my attention for additional books in the series. But after reading my first book by Ms. Pond, I can't say that I would be interested in others. If you are going to charge over the standard $0.99 for a basic self-published story, the reader has the right to expect some professionalism. However this book is filled with mistakes that any decent editor would have caught before you published. Just having someone else read the story could have highlighted the numerous misspelled and outright missing words. Then maybe the story flow would not have been disrupted because you have to re-read a sentence over and over again to make sure you have the right meaning.

I could have dealt with the grammar mistakes if not for the content issues as well. An alien, 500 years in the future, who has not spent time around humans from Earth, would not use 21st century American catchphrases like "awesome." There were other instances. The most predominantly used was the "f***" word. If Adike just used this during the sex scenes you could explain it with the translator. By the way, thanks for that "explainer," even though it took you 3/4's of the book to explain how Tilly was able to understand Adike and all of the other aliens around her. But Adike used his American catchphrases in private. An alien wouldn't do this. Tilley too seemed to be out of sync with her character 500 years in the future. She was just too amazed with the alien technology that should have been routine. Why is she so amazed by the lack of wheels on things? She traveled by spaceship to another galaxy but is agog over a skateboard without wheels.

Then there were the instances where details were added that had nothing to do with the action going on at the time. For example, right in the middle of a battle scene, Ms. Pond decided to describe the plants and animals in the area. Did it have any bearing on the story? No. So who cares?

Each of these mistakes and inconsistencies disrupted the story for me. A good story flows continuously. It may take you around bends or sudden drops. But it still flows evenly. A good editor would have helped discover the impediments in the story to save it. As is, "Saving Adike" is an interesting idea that never reached its full potential.

great book

I really enjoy every one of Rebecca Lorino Pond's books and this one is no exception! This love story is about a woman who volunteers to leave a dying Earth to come to another planet as a bride. She hopes for love and a better life. The planet she goes to is having a problem with infertility, so humans are the key to avoiding extinction. The man she is earmarked for is a disillusioned, bitter war hero has been forced to retire to a farm after a battle that went wrong. The story centers around the heroine who wants to stay with him and the hero, who insists he wants nothing to do with her. Their relationship is brought into clarity when sudden danger of an enemy alien force invades their planet. I'd highly recommend this book to anyone who loves a good love story!

This galaxy ain't big enough for the two of us!

I actually liked this book very well for the most part. Lots of grammatical mistakes, however, and weak plot points. I liked the characters and I wanted to find out what happened to them, so I gave this 4 stars, because I get so tired of the shallow "wham, bam, thank you earther ma'am." It does irk me that the writer has no idea how far other galaxies are. If we were only, what was it? 56 light years away from the Icurus galaxy, as the author has it? We would all be dead. We would be lucky to find a habitable Planet that close to ours. Dude. Don't make up the real science in the science fiction.

Very Good, but beware! Not for Affiliates!

I bought this book thinking I would learn a lot about the best Affiliates Programs, on how to create impressive and persuasive affiliate sites, different options and ideas, and all the stuff I needed to know for becoming an affiliate. To my surprise, this book is oriented on How to create/manage an affiliate program, that is, you being the merchant and how to gather affiliates.

Other than that, the book looks awesome if you are the right reader! But it you are a newbie in affiliate marketing you may fall under the same error.

My Mentor in Paperback

If you have any interest in managing a marketing affiliate program this book is a must read! After recommending this book to several peers and buying it for a new hire, I decided it was about time I wrote a review. As an affiliate manager, I reference this book often. There are enough ear marks and highlighted sections for it to be easily mistaken for a college book. There were several sections that were great reviews of existing practices, others that had easy to reference lists and many 'ah ha, why didn't I think of that' items. Geno also has a blog and active twitter account where he readily answers any questions. I have already seen positive results in all my programs as a result of this book. It's a wonderful resource I will continue to count on.

This Book is HILARIOUS!

I bought this book many years ago at a book store. I was reading it in the store and just had to buy it!
The humor is droll and plays on human quirks. We all may be guilty of doing a few of them. It really allows
one to laugh at the quirks of oneself or someone you may know. It brings up many things that I would personally have never thought of in a super funny way.

It's meant to be ironic not mean spirited. I related to a couple of things in it. I found it
so fun to have a laugh at my own expense. ahah! It also made me think how silly some things really are.
Good stuff, very cleaver. Good therapy for the pessimistic you may know in your life. Good gift for someone like this... I am more optimistic by nature. I think this could perhaps really help the 'self made miserable makers'
If they are not too miserable to read this.... It's a super fast read.

I personally found it to be a riot to read. Fun book - all that is required is a healthy droll/ironic sense of humor.

Somewhere over the years I loaned it out an it didn't return. I repurchased again and found it just as funny as the first time I read it.

Amazing head trip

I never thought I'd see myself writing these words, but this business book seriously changed my life. One other reviewer stated that he read the book multiple times, and I took the same approach with the following result:

First time: I didn't get it. Richard uses a lot of jargon and has some very far out concepts. His ideas are sound but his approach is eccentric, which make me realize I definitely needed to spend more time on it.

Second time: I was getting it. Not quite, but the jargon made sense and the ideas were locking together in my head.

Third time: I not only got it, but was reading each section in the context of the whole, with which I was now familiar with.

Fourth time: I not only got it and saw the whole picture, but was now applying the concepts to my own world.

I haven't read the book for almost seven years and I still use it every day. Reading and applying it was a most rewarding experience, to say the very least.

Mind shifting experience

This is one of the most important books I've read in a long time. In actual fact we've turned into a study guide for our work in Innovation and Reframing. Looking at the other reviewers comments I'm compelled to respond.

What I took form the first reading was that; yes it's good and thought provoking.

Second reading; it's shaping my thoughts about how to think about the business landscape.

Third reading; this happened after I started using the language, that by then was part and parcel of my vocabularly.

The point I'm trying to make is that you should not read this work and leave it. It might leave you unsatisfied and possibly frustrated.

I'm suggesting that you study it; and the way to do it is like this:

Firstly; try to get a feel for the roadmap, that so nicely guides you through the book. Really study the flow and relate it to your own understanding of transformation.

Secondly; try and really understand the meaning of the many key words and phrases that are used in this book for example; reframing, reconfiguration, recreating value creation systems, prime movers, proactive ecogenesis, purposeful emergence, cranes and sky-hooks, and so on.

Thirdly; try not to delve into too much detail too soon. The useful thing about this book is that it gives a lot of information about many different disciplines at a high level.

Lastly; make sure you grasp the "accesible fields of experiencing". These are the tools for map making in the context of reframing.

This is a must read for anyone interested in changing their mindsets and thinking of how business is seen in this modern age. Look at [...] and [...]

An introduction to the art of 'landscaping' and 'mapping'

A visit to the business book department usually is not a very uplifting experience. The unabashed shallowness of content and representation reveals the often questionnable intellectual standards of those professionally engaged in the creation of economic value. A thoughtful book such as 'Reframing Business' is welcome oxygen for someone who finds this lack of discipline deeply troubling.
For those in need of convenient shortcuts in dealing with strategic issues, Normann's book carries mixed messages. The good news is that shortcuts are indeed possible. The bad news is that this requires serious conceptual thinking and reformulation of the issues at a higher level of abstraction. The key word, therefore, is 'elegance' rather than 'simplification'.
'Reframing Business' talks about 'maps' and 'landscapes'. The landscape denotes the dominating logic of value creation that forms the backbone for a given configuration of business systems. Maps are a metaphor then for the symbolising processes of the mind, the conceptual frameworks we use to make sense of what happens in the business environment. Between these two lines of thought Normann posits a dialectical relationship: our strategic paradigms are shaped by the existing business context, which in turn is influenced by the mental frameworks we espouse to approach it. The co-evolution between business reconfiguration and mental reframing is the central theme of the book. Normann's approach is obviously indebted to systems theorists such as Maturana and Varela who introduced the idea of a fundamental interdependency between mind and world almost 30 years ago. This is not new and neither are the implications that Normann elaborates from these basic principles: the experience of the outside world as a dynamic continuum of opportunities and the need for an organisational infrastructure that supports recurrent purposeful emergence (autopoiesis) in order to thrive in it.
This is the hard part of course for those seeking quick fixes in this book. As the author rightly points out, the ability to look at the world as a continuum of opportunities constitutes a fundamental choice. Normann believes that to a certain extent, this way of being in the world can be consciously learned and a large part of the book is in fact a very cerebral introduction to the sister disciplines of 'mapping' and 'landscaping'. The latter centers on the ability to recognise and shape the business offering as a tool for organising co-production between various players in the environment. 'Mapping' requires conscious 'upframing' of the strategic issues to higher levels of abstraction, which Normann undergirds with a rather generic thinking process.
For those with sufficient conceptual agility, Normann's landscaping and mapping toolbox indeed constitutes a rich collection of 'shortcuts' for thinking through strategic issues. They will have no problems of buying into the argument, even if it is occasionally more suggestive than substantial. In fact, for these readers the book will fit snugly into their mental breast-pocket, ready to yield any of the numerous goodies hidden between its covers. However, those readers who have no feeling for the founding principles of this theory, will have a hard time in finding their way in what will seem a sprawling and arcane conceptual edifice.
It is clear by now, I hope, that I worked through this book with considerable enthusiasm. However, to my mind it doesn't qualify for a five star rating, for two reasons. An important reservation concerns the kaleidoscopic variety of sources that is mobilised in order to substantiate the main argument. Normann dips into systems theory, cognition theory, social constructionism, complexity theory and much besides. Swiftly and imperceptibly, he crosses disciplinary borders and switches from metaphorical use of concepts into rigorous explanatory mode. I am convinced this methodological eclecticism obscures the argument. A focused and economical effort at integrating systems and management science would have yielded a more elegant and timeless contribution.
Secondly, as indicated this work takes a conceptual angle in trying to come to grips with the issue of securing organisational viability in a complex environment. This is only part of the story and Normann knows it. In the final chapters on leadership, which I find amongst the weakest of the whole book, he discusses these issues only briefly. Groundedness, authenticity and humility are key aspects of the more spiritual side of leadership and they imperatively need to complement the more cerebral view of leaders as people with a strong capacity 'to perform the mental process of imagining and synthesising in the domain of the upframed conceptual future'. Margaret Wheatley has written eloquently on the 'softer' side of leadership in her books 'A Simpler Way' and 'Leadership and the New Science' but then, as a woman, she can probably afford to strike a more 'emotional' tone in the macho world of management and management science. The problem with Wheatley's book is also that they lack the conceptual incisiveness of Normann's approach. For a combination of intellectual rigour and humane wisdom we need to move out of management science altogether, with the exception, perhaps of Luc Hoebeke's 'Making Work Systems Better' (also published by Wiley) which in its systemic, sober, low-key approach to the discipline of human value creation does not fail to make a deep impression.
Despite these reservations, I have no doubt that Richard Normann's book is a very valuable addition to the management science canon. It deserves to be recommended to thoughtful practitioners and managers.
