About the Author
Paul Tremblay is a multiple Bram Stoker Award finalist and the author of the crime novels The Little Sleep and No Sleep Till Wonderland. He has served as the president of the board of directors of the Shirley Jackson Awards, and his essays and short fiction have appeared in the Los Angeles Times and numerous year’s-best anthologies.

Uneven

I'm not quite sure why I didn't have a better reaction to this one. The mechanics of the writing are good, and any story that acknowledges that "demonic possession" is just how ignorant people say "mental illness" deserves some love.
It just never drew me in as thoroughly as I think it needed to in order to work. It set up the ending like a twist, yet explained it in advance. It mocked itself as a knock-off of THE EXORCIST, but then never did much beyond that. The worst part, by far, were interludes in which the main character, in blog form, explained the subtext of the story.
Man, just talking about that part makes me want to knock a star off the rating. Really, it's an uneven read, neither short enough to pack the punch it wants to, nor long enough to plumb the depths it needs to.

Miss Merry
By Scooby's Ghost
The li'l goon dance, her quirky habit of eating spaghetti without the sauce, her love/hate relationship with her older sister Marjorie (just like real siblings), dodging dad's alligator leg chomps, hiding under tables, all character moments of 8-year-old Merry that make her one of the best drawn characters I've ever read. That's the good stuff, the stuff beneath the plot, it's the scene at the dinner table between Roy Scheider and his son in JAWS. What's more, when Merry goes through the worst, you care what happens to her, feel sympathy for her, a testament to Mr Tremblay's skill at writing such rich characters.
Oh, 'What about the scary stuff?' you ask. Sure. There's plenty of that. I won't give too much away, but one of the scenes involves Merry's cardboard playhouse and a blanket that'll make you feel like a child with bedtime fears again as you read it. One of the scariest scenes written by any author in the last 30 years.
After turning the final page, I am more than aware of why there’s so much buzz about Paul Tremblay, why movie studios were in a heated auction for this book. A HEAD FULL OF GHOSTS will change the game.

An Excellent Chilling Tale of Demonic Possession And Deceit

"A Head Full of Ghosts", by Paul Tremblay, is a novel about demonic possession, deceit, revenge and chaos. It has many elements of "The Exorcist".

Briefly, "A Head Full of Ghosts", is a story about the Barrett family. John (father), Sarah (mother), Meredith/Merry (youngest daughter) and Marjorie (oldest daughter). Marjorie is the main character. She is thought to be possessed by a demon, an evil entity. Some believe she is mentally ill. Others believe she is faking it. Many players get involved to get to the bottom of her "illness" - her parents, psychiatrists, and even a Catholic priest who performs exorcisms.
They all come together to tell a chilling, well written story. "A Head Full of Ghosts" is full of very scary moments, lots of dark suspense, chilling moments and some stomach turning scenes that will make you cringe. Stephen King said this book scared him. I can see why. It scared me too.
The book has many surprise twist, turns and surprises. It builds to a shocking climax.
Paul Tremblay proves that he is an excellent story teller, with "A Head Full of Ghosts". He tells a very shocking tale with a flawless plot. The story moves at a steady pace and is never boring. The characters are well developed. I felt like I was walking through this tale with them. There are many elements of "The Exorcist", that are easy to spot if you read the book or saw the movie. One of the characters even mentions this. .I had a very hard time putting this book down.
In my opinion, "A Head Full of Ghosts" is one of the best books in this genre.
