About the Author

Graham Allan was a student of mathematics at Cambridge University, England, and obtained his PhD there in 1964. After periods as a Fellow at Cambridge, as a lecturer at the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, and as Professor of Pure Mathematics at the University of Leeds, Graham returned to Cambridge as a lecturer in mathematics in 1978, and he became a Reader in Functional Analysis in 1980. Graham was a Fellow of Churchill College from 1978, Director of Studies in Mathematics from 1985, and Vice-Master of the College 1990-93.

Solid Introduction

I learned fluid mechanics from this book in college, tutored undergraduates with the help of this book in grad school, and used it as a reference for my advanced fluids class. In all cases, it was clearer and more understandable than other references I was recommended. I'm not saying this book is perfect - the description of the Navier Stokes equations, a fundamental concept in fluid mechanics, skips too many mathematical steps, as White is prone to do - but overall, if you are strong enough in math, this is a very good reference/first time book for fluid mehanics. White also has a good more advanced text on viscous fluid flow. If you are learning fluid mechanics for the first time, I would also recommend a Schaum's outline to supplement your textbook.

Though the equations are correct and elegant but author makes huge leaps from the mathematical vector equations in theory to simplified equations in an inconsistent manner. This makes instructors' life hard as he has to fill in missing steps for many solved problems in the book. After reviewing all the undergrad textbooks on fluid mechanics, I would recommend people to use Introduction to Fluid Mechanics by Fox and McDonald. This book can be easily read and followed by the student while leaving instructor(like myself) for more time to elaborate on theory in detail.

After listening to the first 6 books of our favorite, Hank the Cowdog, I decided to expand my 5 yo grandson's horizons with another of our family favorites. I have read all of them to my older children but this is the first we've listened to on cd. It is great. It captivated his interest from the start. I do have one minor negative to mention...the voice for Ralph's (the mouse) mother is very annoying to me. It sounds like a stereotypical Jewish or Bronx mother...but Ralph is from California. Regardless, it doesn't bother my grandson and that's what counts. I was surprised that Ralph speaks a little meanly to his little cousins and siblings (not remembering that from the books) but I make little comments to my grandson about it as it happens. We listened to Runaway Ralph right after this one. The next one is not available on cd that I could find, but I will be reading that one to my grandson. He can do the sound effects as I read.

Wonderful, nostalgic adventure story! Great for families

Wonderful, clever book by Beverly Cleary telling the tale of a mouse, a young boy and (of course) a motorcycle. If you are my age (30s) you probably remember these books from growing up. Very nostalgic for my generation - and as I've found out, still very good for all kiddos!

Adjectives for this book include imaginative, adventuresome, clever and funny. Great gook to read aloud for families or perhaps having an older child read alone, I'd guess ages 5-9 would be well suited.

I first read "The Mouse and the Motorcycle" to my son when he was a little boy, and we both loved it for its humor and its suspense (okay, we all know now that Ralph is not going to die, but having read such books as "Charlotte's Web," "Bambi." and "Old Yeller," that is not a sure thing!). For Christmas this year I gave the book to my granddaughter who is nine. She was familiar with Beverly Cleary and told me she looked forward to reading about Ralph the mouse. The edition I received from Amazon did not have the charming cover shown on the product page, but a more cartoonish Ralph doing wheeles on his motorcycle. I am not sure why there was a difference between what was shown on the product page and what I received. My personal preference is for the more realistic looking Ralph, but I do not think it made any difference to my granddaughter. The book itself is a timeless story of someone willing to risk his life to help another living creature - we should all be so lucky to know a Ralph.

About the Author
Greg Gibson is Professor in the School of Integrative Biology at the University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia, and holds adjunct appointments at North Carolina State University and the Burnham Institute for Medical Research. He earned a Bachelor's Degree in Biology at the University of Sydney and a Ph.D. in Cell Biology at the University of Basel (with Walter J. Gehring). Dr. Gibson serves on the editorial boards of several leading journals, and is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. His research is in quantitative genetics and genomics, focusing both on the fruitfly, Drosophila melanogaster, and human variability. Spencer V. Muse is Associate Professor in the Department of Statistics, Bioinformatics Research Center at North Carolina State University. He earned a Bachelor s Degree in Statistics and a Ph.D. in Statistics and Genetics, both at NCSU (the latter with Bruce Weir and Trudy Mackay). Dr. Muse was the recipient of a Sloan Foundation Young Investigator Award (1997 2001). His research is in molecular evolution and bioinformatics.

A very good, updated introduction to genomics

This is an upper level genetics textbook and contains chapters on genome projects, genome sequencing, genomic variation, gene expression, proteomics, and systems biology. There are review questions at the end of the chapters - but that should not imply that this is an elementary textbook. I can only comment on the first four chapters.

Chapter 1 has a somewhat prosaic rundown on the overarching goals of genome sequencing as well as the status of various organisms. There is a interesting section on the history of the competing approaches to the human genome project.

Chapter 2 contains one of the best textbook reviews of BAC and WGSS sequencing techniques I've seen anywhere. Chapter 3, which deals with SNPs is very strong. This is an excellent textbook to get if you are confused about the relationship between QTLs, SNPs, and haplotypes. The authors tie it all together without holding back for fear of overgeneralizing. (e.g. "the vast majority of QTL effects are almost certainly due to as yet unidentified SNPs") You can write a technically correct textbook without explaining things like that but it is no better than a doorstop. I was grateful the authors had the common sense to rise above mere formal pedagogy.

Chapter 4 is very microarray-intensive, which is kind of a shame given how quickly microarrays are disappearing from the scene. RNA-seq is mentioned but it needs to be compared with DGE.

The authors are a geneticist and statistical geneticist and so while very knowledgeable sometimes give the impression of being a bit above the fray with regard current bioinformatic analysis strategies. Because there is no discussion of how short read data is actually processed (hint: it's not with BLAST) the presentation of second and third generation sequencing technology seemed a bit token, but impressive given the time constraints of publishing.

There is room for improvement in the way some topics were discussed in an orthogonal manner but not directly mentioned in the glossary. As I mentioned there is a lot of microarray stuff, a paragraph on CNVs, but the two ideas are not connected via the competitive hybridization technique, which is one of the ways microarrays are still relevant. The terms "methylation" or "epigenetics" are not even in the index even though there is a page on ENCODE.

As I bioinformatics programmer I found this a valuable resource for learning more about population genetics.

School Book Replacement

I purchased this book as a replacement for a stolen school book. It's reasonable price attracted me, it was described as good condition and I was pleasantly surprised when it arrived to find that it is more like new condition. I'm sure it is in much better condition than the one it is replacing! I expect the teacher to be more than happy with it. Thank you

I think everybody knows how to play poker.They just don't know how to do it well.That's how I am.You get instructions on the different types of hands poker has and which suit beats other combinations. You will learn the strategy of playing different card combinations.Anther thing that it teaches you is how to learn to spot when other players are bluffing.Each person has different "tells" and if you don't know them you will lose alot.You will also learn the art of how to bluff,which will I crease you chances of winning. There's a lot of them that I sure wouldn't have recognized before I read this book.another strategy to know is when to fold a hand.And the rewards and consequences of not putting down a hand.The book explains t that some good hands need to be folded( once again, that's me,I hate to fold I need) and how to tell which ones.And the most important thing to know,to me at least is how to bet.Without knowing that there's no point in learning everything else.The book breaks down how much to bet on what hand.I was surprised at how easy it was to learn from this book. Whether you are a first time player or have been at it a long time; you will be educated on the ins and out a of the fame.I had no trouble understanding this book and you shouldn't either.I received this product at a discount in exchange for my honest review

I don't gamble nor most of my friends but whenever we get together all of my friends know how to play poker except me. They would play with poker the whole night while I become somewhat of their hostess preparing their foods and drinks; making sure everything is alright. I made a conviction to myself that I would learn poker and beat all my friends. So I started studying the game, reading books and watching actual games then playing starting with amateurs to more experience players. My learning curve has been excellent I should say. Thanks on a big part to this book. Everything you need to learn about Poker is in this book but of course you still need actual practice to really master this skill. As the saying goes if you are prepared you already won half the battle; this is what this book will do for you, it will prepare. It will not let you get off-guard or surprise by the tricks of your opponent. Your every hand is calculated and base on tested strategy by master poker players.

My rich friend was a casino addict or better say poker addict. I accompanied her once and while all of them are enjoying I'm trying really hard to understand their terms but I can't really get it. My being out of place at that time pushed me to buy this book.

I began reading the middle part for terminologies and the author did a good job not just on defining each but giving sample sentences as well. For the strategies and bluffs, though I still don't play poker, I can say they are effective and my friend agreed to me as well. She actually read the whole book on my reader and finished it with a burning spirit to win. Well base on how helpful it is to me I'm happy to give this rating.
