Great textbook, but a lot to digest, which speaks to the content, (it's dense!) not the author of the text.

This book is dense. It covers a LOT. I hope you have a great professor, like I did. But... Rating the book poorly means that you aren't a serious student. This isn't an entry level book; it's an intro course for juniors and seniors who know their major. I have worked with children for many years, and as a returning student on the SLP track, I wish I had purchased this book instead of renting it. It's well written, informative and DENSE. Be ready to work hard; this information is hard won, but worth it!

About the Author

Lacy Mucklow (MA. ATR-BC, LPAT, LCPAT) is a registered, board certified, and licensed art therapist who has been practicing art therapy in the Washington, DC area since 1999. She has experience working with a variety of mental health populations and settings, including schools, home-based counseling, and hospitals with adolescents, families, and adults. Lacy holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology with a minor in Studio Art from Oklahoma State University, and a Master of Arts degree in Art Therapy from The George Washington University.

Angela Porter is a self-taught artist who finds inspiration in nature, especially ammonite and other fossils. Much of her work is abstract with flowing lines, shapes, and colors that create textured and detailed artworks. She works with technical drawing pens, watercolors, inks, colored pencils, and metallic paints and pens. She lives in South Wales.

Good variety and quality

I am fairly new to adult coloring books but I have now acquired several. I really like this one because of the variety of the images. I can find something for whatever mood i am in and that is appropriate for whatever medium i want to color in, pencils , gel pens or markers. I have used Crayola , Artist's Loft (Michael's store brand) and CraZart color pencils, Bic Mark-it, Sharpie, Stabilio 88, and Staedtler Triplus markers, and a wide variety of gel pens including Jelly Roll, Target's Up brand, staples store brand and many others I'm not ever sure of the brand anymore. I ave attache some pages that I have completed and there is at least one from each section and done in each type of media that I have.

I usually color sitting on the couch with the book cover folded back and end up turning it in all directions depending on the image. Because the cover is nice and stiff, my coloring surface is pretty stable. The middle of the book is harder to bend the cover back but I still manage OK. It would be much easier if it had a spiral binding. The paper is reasonably thick compared to a few other books I have. For the most part I have seen little bleed through even from the Bics and Sharpies, but to be safe I keep a sheet of scrap paper between the coloring page and the next one. I have seen some complaints about the quality of the image reproduction and i have seen what they are talking about, but so far it hasn't been an issue with my ability to color the image

I like that the variety of images gives me some simple and easy to quickly finish for instant gratification and others that are more complex and take me several sessions to complete.

I recommend this for colorists who like variety or are just starting and don't really know what types of images they will enjoy.

Some of the pre-colored pictures don't appear as blank templates in the book, one template is used twice, and a few are visibly pixelated. Lines are missing on several drawings and variation in patterns is limited. The table of contents gives page numbers for chapters, but none of the pages are numbered. Not enough polishing or quality control to justify full price for a published book.

Se trata de una mezcla interesante entre thriller y romance, apta para las personas que no consumimos literatura romántica, y un descanso para los consumidores -como es mi caso- de thrillers bastante "negros".-
La trama es un puzzle bien construido, los lugares interesantes, y la construcción de los personajes, solvente psicológicamente.
Obviamente, en el momento en que aparece una mujer solitaria y un hombre varonil , ya tenemos el final. Pero para llegar a ese final hay sucesos bien desarrollados e interesantes.

Mostly good arrangements of all songs from '25'

In general, this book is about what you would expect: it contains piano transcriptions of every song from 25, along with the vocal line and guitar chords. Like much of Adele's music, most songs on this album are quite piano-heavy, so I had high hopes for the transcriptions being authentic. Mostly, this is true. For example, "All I Ask" is absolutely beautiful and sounds almost spot-on to the album recording. It is my favorite piece from both the album and this book, and you won't be disappointed with it. "When We Were Young" is decent, but when the album recording has both the piano and bass, the transcription in this book has only the piano part--you're missing the little bass runs that I think make the song a bit more exciting (and, no matter how stunningly performed the song may be, the instrumentals are very simple and you can probably do just as good as this transcription just by looking at the chord progression and faking it if you don't care about the bass; I was able to find a transcription I liked better as a digital download on a well-known online sheet music store). Finally, her first hit from the album, "Hello," is quite poorly transcribed if you're just looking for the accompaniment: on this piece, they decided to put the melody into the piano part. It's mostly easy ignore if you're a capable enough player to filter it out, but to play it like that requires more effort and ruins what could have otherwise been a great transcription of a beautiful song. Finally, there are a couple songs that just don't work as well on the piano (ones without a prominent piano part in the album itself), but I wasn't as interested in those anyway.

I'm deducting one star for the aforementioned reasons: some otherwise good transcriptions are mysteriously missing something that would make them more authentic, and some "accompaniment" lines are transcribed with the melody (but at least the whole book doesn't consistently do that). In general, the book is well done, and it does include all songs from the album with reasonably good transcriptions of most of them.

Note to the publishers: Please let us look inside the book before we buy! It's so hard to judge if the music is at your level before even looking at it. I'm disappointed that many of these songs are a bit above my intermediate skill level. I would have easily known that by looking through the pages for 2 minutes.

The easiest songs to play are "Sweetest Devotion" in the key of C, and "Send my Love" in the key of D. If you are like me, and aren't going to spend a lot of time practicing the more difficult songs, I would buy those separately.

The arrangements were done in a way that an intermediate player such as myself could enjoy the music, though I believe an advanced player would enjoy the songs as well. Though I can't say I'm a rabid fan to the point of buying concert tickets in the first 10 minutes before they're sold out, I do appreciate the beauty of her music, and this another way that I'm able to enjoy it.

Best cookie cookbook I've ever found.

If you are considering Mrs. Field's Cookie Book, you won't be disappointed. I've used the recipes from this cookie cook book for at least 10 years, now, and everyone who has ever tried one of my cookies says that they are absolutely wonderful!

In a previous review, the reviewer stated that Mrs. Fields recommends baking times that are too long. This isn't true. She uses lower oven temps in her recipes, and this calls for longer baking times. (The lower temperatures keep the cookies from burning easily.) Just wanted to pass this info on. Have fun baking cookies! :)

A small collection of solid cookie recipes, but don't expect the taste known as the Mrs. Fields brand

This is a cookie recipe book I've reached for many times. Although it is a small collection of around 70 recipes, I have not had a batch turn out badly, and it has loads of ideas --especially if you enjoy holiday cookie baking.

Divided into the sections of:
drop cookies
fancy cookies
filled cookies
bar cookies
and special treats, it makes it easy to locate a cookie that suits your mood, especially because there are color photographs of every cookie at the top of every recipe.

Instructions are simple and even include photographs to illustrate certain steps, such as rolling cookies or dipping in chocolate, so that all is clearly understood.

All recipes are printed on glossy paper--easy wiping.

You will find all variations of cookies, such as basic sugar cookies, snowy white chocolate crescents, chocolate sandwich cookies, fruit fille jewels, custard filled cookies, triple layer lemon bars, Caramel filled brownies, and even cakes and pies.

Will you find a chocolate chip cookie recipe? You betcha...but don't expect to replace your trips to the Mrs field's counter. Mrs. Fields noted herself that this is simply a collection of recipes she loves but not those of her store. To get the taste of her cookies, you gotta make flour from grinding oatmeal to a powder which won't be found herein.

But if copycat taste of her brand isn't your goal but, instead, a truly solid collection of recipes I have personally tested for years with flawless results...I think you will find it here. It is my go-to book for cookie batches and truly a "keeper".

Negatives: some recipes are common and for a small collection, that may or may not be appreciated. No nutritional info. But I think that is to be expected in a sugar and butter filled cookbook, chocolate chip cookie recipe is just plain ol' Tollhouse you already know and love rather than the signature Mrs. Fields taste.

Conclusion: the Mrs. Fields name is for marketing, but the collection is one of great cookies, bars, and even some cakes and pies that all produce great results for this cook.

The BEST Cookie Book. BUY IT!

The Egg Nog cookie recipe is worth the price of this book alone. It is a favorite of our son and thankfully the stores here have egg nog available between October and February. I do substitute Macadama nuts in the Chocolate chip cookie recipe. Her Peanut butter cookies are awesome. Oh and the Lemon Poppy Seed cookies are GREAT! I appreciate the layout of the book. The ingredients are listed then the simple instructions for mixing and baking. The photographs unlike some cooking publications actually look like what the cookie will look like. Nothing is more disappointing than making something and seeing it has no resemblance to the photo.
Another nice thing about her cookies is men love them and so will women. But having sons and a husband who LOVE great tasting non frilly cookies her cookies are the ONLY ones they have given 5 STARS too. That says ALOT!

About the Author

Stephane Faroult first discovered relational databases and the SQL language back in 1983. He joined Oracle France in their early days (after a brief spell with IBM and a bout of teaching at the University of Ottawa) and soon developed an interest in performance and tuning topics. After leaving Oracle in 1988, he briefly tried to reform and did a bit of operational research, but after one year, he succumbed again to relational databases. He has been continuously performing database consultancy since then, and founded RoughSea Ltd in 1998.

Pascal L'Hermite has been working with relational databases in OLTP, production and development environments on Oracle Databases for the past 12 years and on Microsoft SQL Server for the past 5 years.

For some shops, THE book you need

I'm at odds with the first two reviewers, but I think it depends on what you're looking for. This book is NOT about classical tuning. Classical tuning is "tune the server", and "tune the query".

The emphasis - in the preface and the excellent Chapter 6 - is that the real gains are usually elsewhere, when you have older code.

I work with a 25 year heritage of fairly well written apps. Many of them have the described situation - a single query that's been broken into two or more parts, with an outer loop and (at least one) inner loop. When server memories were 64K, or 1 Meg, or 4 Meg, and CPU's only came in packages of 1, and disk channels were slow, and networks were slower, this was often the only practical way to get a result.

The interplay changed over the years, but the old code worked. In the past few years, with 64-bit processors, cheap 64-CPU servers, and multi-io disk channels, a wierd thing happened. We found that moving to newer systems and faster hardware made things run SLOWER.

The answer time and again was in those "split loop queries". If we turned them back into one big query - the kind that you couldn't run before, we would see performance improvements of hundreds or thousands of times. In the end, the math proved - on powerful machines, most of the overhead is sending the query, compiling it, and sending it back. If one monster query takes a full second, but every query in the loop takes 1/4 second - if that inner loop runs 1000 times, you lose.

Meantime, that 64-core machine has every CPU working full blast - recompiling the same stupid statement over and over! The problem is, you try to tell this to a developer, they don't beleive you "I didn't change anything in the code".

And that's what this book is about. Changing the code. This book validates what I've been trying to tell my managers and coders; I am grateful to Faoult and L'Hermite for showing I was not making this up myself.

The second reviewer is just reading the wrong book for whatever it is they are trying to do.

This is an essential book for certain people, and is certainly of no interest whatsoever for others. (If you don't own a 1941 Plymouth, the 1941 Plymouth manual isn't much use - otherwise, it's a must).

"The application design is the most important factor in performance"
I've heard the phrase so many times, it doesn't even register on me. Sure the application design is the most important factor in performance, but what do I do about it? Well, "Refactoring SQL Applications" (RSA) is the book I've been waiting for. RSA lays out examples of how application coders tend to think either procedurally or object oriented and how this thinking can completely miss the boat when it comes to writing SQL and interacting with databases.
In RSA, Stephane Faroult, lays out examples of Java code, user defined functions and views and how a coders notions of modular procedural programing and/or object instantiation can undermine database performance from cookie cutter reuse of code to table joins written in Java. If you've ever seen Tom Kyte's "Developer Super Session - The Best Way", then you know the best way is not to do it all and his example is coders doing "count(*)" to find out how many loops to do or how big an array to layout. Tom explains the disasters this can create and how the best way is just to not do the count(*) and how this works by letting the database do the work. Letting the database do the work is explained clearly and with many examples from different perspectives in "Refactoring SQL Applications".

I don't agree with the author's definition of 'refactoring'

Here is what I was looking for in a book and did not find here:
A set of SQL refactoring patterns - like what Martin Fowler offers in his book for oo languages.

I want to know stuff like:
How do i remove duplication in SQL.
How to make the code more readable/clear and decoupled
how do i change the structure of queries without changing the results.
how do i turn a set of subqueries with similar/same criteria into another structure

What I got instead
a book about tuning and performance improvements
a book about embedded sql app-dev refactoring

I'm moderately disappointed, but I think this book will give me some knowledge that may help me invent 'real' t-sql refactoring patterns.
