Complex as he is colorful, Phil Jackson has led an improbable basketball life, marching to the tune of his own iconoclastic drummer and managing to win at every level along the way. He doesn't think like an average jock, nor does he approach his game like one: just ask Michael Jordan or Shaquille O'Neal, who've played better for him than for anyone else. Roland Lazenby couldn't have come up with a better title for his compelling exploration of what makes Jackson tick and how he evolved into one of the most successful and driven coaches in NBA history; for Jackson, the joy of his game is every bit as cerebral and psychological as it is physical. His aim, he says, is to help his players "strengthen the muscle of their minds."

Of course, Jackson--part shaman, part shrink, part mentor, part guide--has found some fascinating ways to strengthen his own, including LSD, meditation, Zen, Native American culture, William James's Varieties of Religious Experience, and the Grateful Dead. They are as much a part of Jackson's evolving core as pounding the offensive boards with the Knicks and warring with Bulls' management. Mindgames is the story of Phil Jackson's remarkable rise to the top of the NBA coaching hierarchy. In it, author Roland Lazenby reveals the fascinating elements of Jackson's life and mental approach to coaching that have made followers of his players but also have made him--perhaps not surprisingly--unpredictable and sometimes unpopular to outsiders. It is also a detailed basketball story, with entertaining accounts from Jackson's years with the New York Knicks under the legendary Red Holzman to the remarkable six championships as coach of the Chicago Bulls and now a seventh title with the Los Angeles Lakers.

Born into a Pentecostal family that kept its distance from the secular world, the young Jackson developed deep appreciation for Native American culture and spiritual beliefs, beliefs that would later influence his unorthodox coaching methods. His transformation from naive child to streetwise flower child happened in a matter of months; his immersion in the counterculture of the 1960s and his injury-plagued NBA career would determine the person--and coach--he would become.

Regarded as a pariah from his playing days, Jackson toiled anonymously as coach of the Continental Basketball Association's Albany Patroons before the Bulls hired him as an assistant coach in 1987 at the unlikely age of forty-one. Assuming the head coaching duties after two seasons, he immediately separated himself from other NBA coaches by heaping pressure on opponents instead of his players. To lessen the anxiety of playing in the white-hot world of the NBA, he brought a thoughtful approach to performance--from meditation to mindfulness to yoga.

His success lies in his intensely psychological approach to building championship teams--maintaining authority without dictating to his players, building friendships with them without pandering to them, and earning their respect.

Jackson's approach is not for everyone. His battles with Bulls management spilled over into an ugly display in 1998 in the midst of their last championship run, and his relationships with a few NBA coaches have turned contentious. Yet even those who don't like him marvel at his mastery, at what he can do with a basketball team that no one else can.

Very Entertaining

I really enjoy NBA basketball and I have watched DVDs of a number of the Bull's and Michael Jordan's great games of the 90s, but my knowledge of the game and players is fairly basic and I am not a "fanatic" about the sport. From that perspective, Mindgames is a very readable and enjoyable book. It also has a lot of interesting information about Jackson, and Chicago and LA players, without being "overly detailed." The author based his book on an incredible number of interviews and he uses numerous quotes from important sources, which adds a lot to the story as it unfolds chronologically. The book is very thorough in covering Jackson's Chicago years and his first year at LA. It gives what seems to be a very honest and fair picture of Jackson that is very positive overall. The only thing I didn't like were the numerous stories of the conflicts Chicago VP Jerry Krause had with Jackson as well as with Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen. These are scattered throughout 100 pages of the 400 page book. They are part of the chronological history but I tired of them after awhile. Were it not for that, I'd probably give the book five stars.

A great account of Jackson's life

Having always been intrigued by Phil Jackson as a coach and a person, I was thrilled to see that an account of his interesting career and life had been published. Being a coach myself, I had always wanted to find how this living legend's mind works and maybe try to apply some of his ideas/concepts to my coaching. That was the reason that I had devoured "Sacred Hoops" as soon as it came out back in 95-96.
I was also excited to see "the value" that the book offers: 400 pages..."Not bad" I thought, and I went ahead and ordered the book right away!
The content of the book did not disappoint me one bit. It is nicely structured (chronologically) and it gives quite an insight and quite a few details of Jackson's life. Usually a slow reader, I breezed through this nicely written piece of work by Lazenby. I especially enjoyed the quotes from interviews and informal discussions that either Jackson himself or people he was associated with had given in the past. I also really liked the fact that the book includes Jackson's first season in LA. I think this adds tremendous value to the book: it makes its publishing a lot more timely and therefore more appealing.
My only couple of concerns with this publication are the following: a) The book seems to repeat itself at times mentioning the same thing over and over maybe from a different perspective but the same information/idea none-the-less. I apologize for not having a good example of this handy, but I wasn't taking notes while I was reading... b) The book is a little too "superficial" for my taste. Jackson is such a complicated and unique person and I think this book makes little or no attempt to try and "decipher" him. I am not sure, however, that that was even the intent of the author to begin with. Maybe all Lazenby wanted to do was give an account of Jackson's life and not really try to judge/critique his coaching techniques or philosophies. Regardless, I felt that since the author seems to "know" Jackson so well, he should have tried to offer an opinion on some of the controversial decisions in his personal or professional life.
Overall, I'd say that anyone interested in Jackson should get this book. Lazenby gives you an objective account of Jackson's life (the good AND the bad; unlike many autobiographies...) and one will have a great time reading through the stories and looking at the pictures.
Should a basketball (or other) coach get the book though in order to maybe "gain some coaching knowledge"? I wouldn't think so...

I really enjoyed reading about Phil's background

Difficult to rate this book as it's very well written and interesting to read, but the title is misleading. There's so little about Phil Jackson's mindgames, that making it a title of a book is mischievous. However, I really enjoyed reading about Phil's background, his years as a player, coach in CBA, assistant and then head-coach in two great franchises. It's a long journey, but I recommend to read this book.

About the Author
David Sherwin is an interaction designer and creative director with a depth of expertise in developing compelling solutions for challenging business problems. His first book was Creative Workshop: 80 Challenges to Sharpen Your Design Skills (HOW Books).

David is currently an Interaction Design Director at frog, a global innovation firm, where he helps to guide the research, strategy and design of novel products and services for some of today's leading companies and nonprofit organizations. He is also a senior lecturer in the BFA in Interaction Design program at California College of the Arts. He has spoken and conducted workshops at events such as SxSW, Interaction 11, HOW Design Live, as well as at several design schools around the world. Excellent book of exercises and inspirations for designers

I've been around for awhile, and have stacks of books claiming to spark design skills and creative thinking. Most end up in the back corner of the shelf, never living up to their promise. I'm impressed, and happy to say this book is a different breed.

1) It's a beautiful book. There is design love and care on every page.
2) It's designed for reading and use. It's not a coffee-table book or pretty play thing.
3) There's a free teacher's guide, [...] to help instructors and managers use the book.
4) The inspirations aren't just in the book's design (a common failing in design books), but the stories, and challenging exercises even experienced designers can benefit from. It's an easy book to use for team challenges, offsites and to teach old dogs some new things.
5) It includes exercises from a wide range of kinds of design, which is fun and challenging. Some are print based, others are interactive, or involve urban wayfinding, advertising, web apps, dishware, clothing, you name it. It fulfills the idea of forcing you to stretch your creative muscles.

Highly recommended for people who want to learn by making, and who have some design experience but want to grow and stretch their creative abilities.

Great book, easy to absorb, and good format. The practice tests were spot-on and helped me pass with no problem. The wording is simplified, so I could easily understand the laws that were being discussed without getting too lost in dense legalese.

This is a GREAT BOOK

If you're looking for a book to help you study and properly prepare you look no further. I used this book to study and pass the notary test on my first try. Book has a great format, easy to understand and the test are an excellent study guide. I was nervous when I purchased this book, but I sat down to take my exam and didnt miss a beat. Passed my NY state Notary Test of the first try with the help of this book. Forget all the other study guides - this is all you need. PLEASE do the study guide IN ORDER. . Took test, got results in 7 -10 days. Submitted applications and less then 4 weeks later I got my license. Total time - Spend 4- 6 weeks reviewing this book. Take the practice tests. You need to get 28 multiple choice questions (out of 40) to pass.
I was issued my notary license in less about 4 weeks from taking the test to submitting application. $15 test fee, $60 for 4 years. Plus the stamp custom order on Vista Print is $42 or XrubberStamp has a less expensive 5 line one for less than $20 with shipping (no prime)

The best choice for Minecraft diaries

If you are looking at this review for a story with the same title and similar cover, then let me help you out. "Diary of a Legendary Ender Dragon" by Christopher Craft is your best choice. Any other unofficial Minecraft books are too simple and lack the depth of character, plot, and Minecraft content compared to any of his books. From the first chapter, my son was interested. It has the vivid description of Steve's exploration of the dark world and the instant action of the plot. Minecraft fans will delight in the familiar setting and adventure seekers will enjoy the engaging story that keeps you going from chapter to chapter while staying true to the Minecraft theme. If you want to know what it takes to become a legendary Ender Dragon, this perspective is great.

Excellent treatise with a scholastic foreword

Thomas Paine's eye-opening analysis of income inequality within the United States strikes a surprising resonance with the reader. For most, this resonance will be founded in the disturbing revelation that Paine's ideas on the estate tax are blatantly spurned during one of the worst period's of economic inequality in our nation's history. In fact, the foreword makes note of pointing out the 114th Congress repealed the "death tax" in April.

Unlike the plainly skewed foreword, Paine's argument does not rely on partisanship nor an agenda. Like he so clearly states in multiple lines, his ideas are about principles: core American principles such as justice and equality. Paine's usage of ethos and pathos in this way allows any reader (policy wonk or CSPAN avoider) to bask in truly inspirational Revolutionary writing.

Although incredibly well-written, I find it disappointing that the most refreshing read I've had on economic inequality in 2015 was written more than 200 years ago.

on hand outs. We want to support them so they can get build a strong foundation for their lives and truly become strong members of our nation.

comprehensive review

A 500 page review of the 3000 page standard textbook in SurgPath - is that possible?

The basic structure of the review is based on the 31 chapters in Rosai's two-volume textbook. This includes the pastel-colored chapter coding and the sub structuring of each chapter (eg. neuromuscular system with CNS, peripheral nerves, skeletal muscle). In contrast to the other available multiple-choice reviews on Anatomic Pathology (~1800 questions: Lefkowitch 1st ed. 2006; ~600 questions: Sternberg's by DiPatre 1st ed. 2005), the format here is mainly based on true/false statements. This "new" design of ~4000 questions provides an interesting transition between the "standard" MC questions and the "rapid-fire question-answer facts" provided in the Pathology Board Review by Roberts (3rd ed. 2006; over 4000 question-answer combinations). The main difference to the aforementioned review is, that the pages containing the questions are separated from the answers. While this layout prevents "cheating", the format of the answers does not allow independent reading of only the answers (eg. some refer to the phrasing in the question). Therefore, the page in the main textbook is provided - which is really helpful.

Why not five stars?

Well, in those chapters with many subchapters [eg. Gastrointestinal tract (GIT) or Female reproductive system], the separation of question and answers does not allow quick and easy look-up. Example: a question #8 in the GIT sub-chapter "Small bowel" requires exact tracking in the answer section to this chapter, as there are answers #8 in the subchapter esophagus, stomach, small bowel, appendix, colon and anus. This is more of a layout problem but can be annoying as reading the answer of a different question distracts quite a bit. Small organ symbols/icons behind the answer could have solved this issue...

It still rocks!

The main strength of this review is the comprehensive recapitulation of the enormous two-volume set. When reviewing a chapter in Rosai, the outline is mainly anatomic and the style is unique and entertaining; which can be confusing (probably the reason why some like Sternberg better...). However, if you like "Rosai," and plan to read it from cover to cover, but are overwhelmed by the 10kg of surgical pathology, BUY this review. It provides you with some sort of attending guided marker. There are not many pictures, but the book highlights on average 2 facts per page in the "big" Rosai - and if reviewed together (on a large and stable desk), chapters fly by - almost (50 true/false statements ~2.5 hours).

Final remark

This is truly a SURGICAL pathology review book and does therefore not include separate chapters of the "other" topics integrated in the Anatomic Pathology part of the Boards (eg. Immuno, Molecular-, Cyto-, Forensic- or Infectious Disease Pathology). But that should be clear, as it is based on a Surgical Pathology Text.

The review by Damjanov and Nola provides an inexpensive and interesting "exoskeleton" to Rosai's; it is truly comprehensive and highlights 2 essentials per page. To answer my initial question - it is possible... Good job.

Not perfect but not bad

The format of the questions is T and F ..which is not very helpful for the MCQ exams...however, the authors tried to highlight the most important points in each chapter. I believe that these points are the ones that every pathologist should know (especially those sitting for Boards). If you know how to use the book in an efficient way by focusing on the explanations and reading about the points, you may benefit a lot from it.

It helped me read the Big Rosi' book

I like this book very much, I was using it when I was reading the big text book (Rosi and Ackerman surgical pathology), without this question book I might not be able to read the entire Rosi's book. It helped me to pass the board exam. But I have to say that as every book written by many authors, some chapters are better than others. If you are reading the (Rosi and Ackerman surgical pathology) get this question book; I am not sure how it is going to be if you read this book only with out using the main text book; my evaluation for this book is based on reading it with the main text book.

There are three criteria for inclusion in this near-comprehensive reference work on a relatively narrow aspect of folklore: the creature cannot be divine, it must be a supernatural being from mythology, legend, folklore, or classic literature, and it may be a cryptozoological or symbolic being, such as a heraldic beast. Although various other sources treat giants, monsters, and mystery animals, none seems to cover them all at once, and this work's inclusion of the symbolic element appears to be unique. Entries give basic descriptions of each creature as well as its activities, region, culture, and historical period, and each entry is both cross-referenced and referenced to a selected bibliography. Appendixes categorize beings under country or region as well as such headings as "Beings Associated with Catastrophe." While works as modern as J.R.R. Tolkien's are cited, the Harry Potter series is not, though several monsters described here are present in J.K. Rowling's books. Perhaps Rose (Spirits, Fairies, Gnomes, and Goblins) does not consider Potter classic literature, but for a current reference work, this may soon prove a serious oversight. If you're looking for a children's book with colorful illustrations and a sentimental tone then you won't be as pleased as I was

This book was above all else an incredibly comprehensive mythical bestiary. No other single volume I've seen to date can compare to the sheer breadth of creatures referenced in these pages. It gives a truly global perspective to the term monster. In my case, this book was everything I had hoped it would be -- a thorough encyclopedia on the subject. If you're looking for a children's book with colorful illustrations and a sentimental tone then you won't be as pleased as I was with this purchase. This book serves to introduce the reader to the various imaginary creatures of the world, many of which will surely be new to the average enthusiast, and hopefully inspire them to further investigate those they find particularly intriguing.

Fun -and- educational.

This is one for both the scholar who needs a quick reference and the casual enthusiast looking to impress friends with mythical trivia (not that many people have friends who are so easily impressed).

If you have any interest, academic or casual, in the mythical beasts of yore, I highly recommend Rose's encyclopedias (this, and the "sequel," which contains more benign beings). It's fascinating to see icons from ancient Mesopotamian myth, Japanese legend, Native American religion and contemporary American folklore all on the same page.

In addition to thorough explanations of the origins and significance of each beastie, Rose goes one step further by explaining parallels to other cultural icons, common heritages and even manifestations in modern popular culture (for instance, there are numerous entries about creatures from J.R.R. Tolkien's world, which, while not strictly mythical themselves, do draw their inspiration from real-world mythology).

There are a number of similar cyclopedic works available, but this one differs from the masses in that it is both thoroughly academic (unlike many of the recent pop-culture anthologies), -and- thoroughly enjoyable. Highly recommended.

A Concise and Presise evaluation of thousands of Mythological creatures.

Much like her earlier written Encyclopedia this one once again hits the nail right on the head, giving great refference to thousands of mythological beings at one's fingertips. From the Greek Titans to American Indian tribal spirits, from nursery bogies to humorous antiquities of history this book has it all. A great smorgasbord of the monsters and deiteis of almost every civilization on Earth all convienintly located in one direct and enjoyable resource is both amazing and extreemly entertaining. This book is one that can be both read continously page to page or simply as a refference either way it is fun and interesting to turn from page to page from Appolyon to Garm to Scylla to Baba Yaga and to any other entity that ruminates in these pages of this glorious encylopedia.

I would highly recomend getting her first encylopedia "Spirits, Fairies, Leprechauns, and Goblins: An Encyclopedia" as well as looking at such books as "Bestiary: Being an English Version of the Bodleian Library, Oxford, MS Bodley 764", "The Book of Fabulous Beasts", "On Monsters and Marvels", and "The Book of Imaginary Beings". although all these books are slightly more informational and less refference and encyclopedia like they are just as enjoyable and do a great job on further investigating monsters and myth.
