I now can match my strings with my game.

OMG I learned more about tennis racquet strings from this book than I have learned in 40 years of playing tennis. It's a concise read that is very informative. My next restringing I will try a co-poly 16 tensioned at 55 and can't wait to feel the difference. Finally I can make educated adjustments to help improve my game. Too bad the olympics are over. Look out 2020 here I come.

Concise stringing guide

This booklet is one of the best (perhaps the best) overview of tennis racquet stringing out there. It is concise and to the point, avoiding much of the non-sensical marketing hype ("great control, power, spin and feel") out there. I began stringing my racquets several years back and had to learn by trial and error how to do so effectively. This booklet is most useful to players who may not string their own racquet but need a way to assess, select and communicate their stringing preferences.

About the Author
David C. Ling (Ph.D, 1984, and MBA, 1977, The Ohio State University) is the William D. Hussey Professor of Real Estate and the Director of the Real Estate Research Center in the Warrington College of Business Adminstration and Graduate School of Business at the University of Florida. Professor Ling serves on numerous editorial boards including the Journal of Housing Economics, Real Estate Economics, The Journal of Real Estate Research, and Real Estate Finance. He has provided research and consulting services to several state and national organizations including the Federal National Mortgage Association, the National Association of Home Builders, the National Association of Realtors, and the Florida Association of Realtors. He is a Fellow of the Homer Hoyt Institute and board member of the Real Estate Research Institute.

Comprehensive Real Estate Overview

Real Estate Principles is an extremely readable, easy to follow introductory text to Real Estate. The book is well laid out with many excellent examples and studded with references to superb websites. The graphics are great and the exhibits well thought out.
The 'Time Value' of money section is one of the best I've ever read and will help the novice understand this critical aspect of real estate finance/analysis.
The Appraisal chapters thoroughly cover the market, cost and income approaches and the Legal chapters cover the essentials of notes, mortgages and deeds.
'Concept Checks' through out the chapters allow readers to verify their understanding of key points with solutions provided at the end of each chapter.
The book is extremely well organized with each chapter beginning with an outline and a list of 'Learning Objectives'. In addition, each chapter ends with a Summary, a listing of Key Terms and Study Questions.
'Career Focus' is another recurring theme featuring side bars tied to the main text that outline different careers tracks available in real estate.

Because it covers so much, it can't describe enough for someone to say they've learned the ropes. They'll have to find more specialized books or courses to do that. But still, a great book to introduce you to the full scope of real estate- development, financing, marketing, etc. Also lists many useful websites for further research.

Don't you just love it that oil prices are so low? Why put ugly solar-panels on one's roof or use wind power when home heating and/or natural gas prices are so low? I'm laughing my face off at Al Gore, Greenpeace, the Sierra Club and all the other phony environmentalist-mafiosos. This is also a well-written, scholarly and comprehensive book.

About the Author
Bradford D. Jordan is Professor of Finance and holder of the Richard W. and Janis H. Furst Endowed Chair in Finance at the University of Kentucky. He has a longstanding interest in both applied and theoretical issues in corporate finance and has extensive experience teaching all levels of corporate finance and financial management policy. 

Stephen Ross is presently the Franco Modigliani Professor of Finance and Economics at the Sloan School of Management, Massachusetts Institute of Technology.  One of the most widely published authors in finance and economics, Professor Ross is recognized for his work in developing the Arbitrage Pricing Theory and his substantial contributions to the discipline through his research in signaling, agency theory, option pricing, and the theory of the term structure of interest rates, among other topics.  A past president of the American Finance Association, he currently serves as an associate editor of several academic and practitioner journals.  He is a trustee of CalTech, a director of the College Retirement Equity Fund (CREF), and Freddie Mac.  He is also the co-chairman of Roll and Ross Asset Management Corporation.

Randolph W.Westerfield is Dean Emeritus of the University of Southern California's Marshall School of Business and is the Charles B. Thornton Professor of Finance. He came to USC from the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, where he was the chairman of the finance department and a member of the finance faculty for 20 years.

Very deceived. I wish I could have my money back. I rented this book through Amazon Kindle thinking I was going to get an Access code because all rentals give Access codes, but no Acess code was given. If you need this book for "reading on the go", it is excellent. But if you're a student that needs an Access code, don't get it.

The series first appeared in French in Le Petit Vingtieme, a children's supplement to the Belgian newspaper Le Vingtieme Siecle on 10 January 1929. The hero of the series is Tintin, a young Belgian reporter. He is aided in his adventures from the beginning by his faithful fox terrier dog Snowy (Milou in French). Later, popular additions to the cast included the brash, cynical and grumpy Captain Haddock, the bright but hearing-impaired Professor Calculus (Professeur Tournesol) and other colorful supporting characters such as the incompetent detectives Thomson and Thompson (Dupond et Dupont). Herge himself features in several of the comics as a background character; as do his assistants in some instances.
The success of the series saw the serialized strips collected into a series of albums (24 in all), spun into a successful magazine and adapted for film and theatre. The series is one of the most popular European comics of the 20th century, with translations published in over 50 languages and more than 200 million copies of the books sold to date.
The comic strip series has long been admired for its clean, expressive drawings in Herge's signature ligne claire style. Engaging, well-researched plots straddle a variety of genres: swashbuckling adventures with elements of fantasy, mysteries, political thrillers, and science fiction. The stories within the Tintin series always feature slapstick humor, accompanied in later albums by sophisticated satire, and political and cultural commentary.

About the Author
Herge, one of the most famous Belgians in the world, was a comics writer and artist. The internationally successful Adventures of Tintin are his most well-known and beloved works. They have been translated into 38 different languages and have inspired such legends as Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein. He wrote and illustrated for The Adventures of Tintin until his death in 1983.

A True Classic

King Ottakar's Scepter is one of the top 5 Tintin titles. It's a wonderful, mile-a-minute adventure that fans of Indiana Jones will easily recognize. In addition, it introduces the wonderful country of Syldavie, recognizable to all true Tintin fans.

In comparison to Herge's later, more deliberate works, this one throws Tintin about like a cork on the ocean, with every page having at least four incredible escapes from danger or death. Some of them are nearly impossible to believe (Tintin survives being dropped out of an airplane?), but on the other hand they make "Scepter" more enjoyable and more authentic to the golden age of rip-roaring comic serials. If you're just starting to buy Tintin, put this at the top of the list.

I can't be wholly objective about Tintin. I've been reading the books since I was in elementary school, following Tintin's amazing adventures from the Middle East to the Moon. The boy reporter is great for kids, but he's also entertaining for adults.

Two notes:
- This is a reworking of the original artwork, done by Herge himself post World War II. This is evident in the more mature, vibrant, and polished artwork. To understand more about this, look up Tintin and Herge in Wikipedia. In short, Herge did the strips that form this book before World War II in an earlier, more primitive style that reflects their original appearance in newspapers. He re-did many of these early strips later on. I, for one, believe that the later result is better, although you ought to try to find one of the earlier books to see what I mean.
- You won't get a true feeling for Tintin if you read "him" in translation. French is full of idioms and connotations that don't survive translation, and even then, Tintin is a Belge, not a Francais! Worst of all, the "English" translations are British English that use idioms and language that Americans won't recognize. I really believe that Tintin is worth learning French for.

Tintin and Milou try to solve a royal mystery in Syldavia

"Le Sceptre d'Ottokar" ("King Ottokar's Sceptre") is a Les Aventures de Tintin in which our intrepid hero gets to do a lot of deductive reasoning. Certainly there are more actual clues than Hergé usually includes in his mysteries. Tintin encounters Professor Alembik, who studies seals (no, not the friendly little animals but the things you stamp into wax on official papers). This seems a harmless career choice but Tintin finds that both he and the good professor are embroiled with secret agents and a plot against the King of Syldavia. It seems there is a major loophole in the laws of the monarchy, for if the King were to lose possession of King Ottokar's sceptre, he would lose the right to rule and have to abdicate. This would work to the advantage of the bad guys across the border in Borduria, so it is up to Tintin and Milou to save the day. They are aided in this endeavor by Dupont and Dupond; to be precise, they endeavor to aid.
"Le Sceptre d'Ottokar" was produced by Hergé in 1939 and the more you know about Europe on the eve of the Second World War, the more you are likely to see lurking behind the characters and actions of this Tintin adventure. However, it is hard to tell if Hergé is trying to make any sort of a point; certainly during the war it was clear Tintin lived in a different world, so I am loathe to see anything beyond a compelling narrative. This is an actual mystery, where clues need to be solved and mysterious developments need to be explained. On top of all that throw in the ongoing perilous situations that our hero and his faithful terrier find themselves in time and time again in these early adventures. Oh, and there is also Tintin's first meeting with Bianca Castafiore, which is not exactly something I am inclined to celebrate, but that is just me. A very solid offering from Hergé.

what better way to introduce them to their ancestral language

This brings back " mes souvenirs d'enfances.....quand j'etais moins vieux.." Tintin, Capitaine Haddock, Professeur Tournesol, Milou, are all classic which must be passed on to the next generation...notably my children...as this undoubtedly expose them to the "better cartoons" and idols instead of the Spongebob et al. Besides, what better way to introduce them to their ancestral language.

Ultimate Surger Guide-is the ultimate

I am a beginner and my teacher used this book in my surger class-she told me to buy it and read it like a college text book, complete with highlighting passages. I did and WOW. I refer to it often-the photos are detailed and directions complete and easy to follow and understand. A lot of shortcuts are included as well. I highly recommend this book for all ages of surgers!

AVOID Serger "Fail" with this book

Sergers are GREAT but you either take to them right away or find them frustrating. To avoid "serger fail", this book is excellent and it was the first one I got when I bought a serger.

BIG colorful sharp photos of stitches and threads and examples.

I suggest you make a sample of each stitch your machine can do, staple the sample on a page and write down the tension and settings. Put these pages into a notebook. When you pull out your machine, you'll be ready to set it up without having to dig into memory to remember the last sewing session.

Sergers are phenomenal on knits, make children's clothes in literally minutes and finish raw edges on materials like cottons and linen quickly and beautifully. I sew summer skirts in 20 minutes with my serger but I would not be able to do that without having this resource book handy.

Should be required reading

I can't say enough about this book. I ordered a serger on line and I had a particular purpose in mind. You have to know that I failed sewing in school, have owned five sewing machines since then and never learned to use any of them properly. Before it was delivered I ordered this book from Amazon with one day shipping and so I had it for two days before the serger arrived. During those two days I read it from cover to cover and then over again. I was still terrified but felt that I had learned a lot. My machine came pre-threaded and so I sat right down to practice. Voila a great first try, but now for my projects' rolled hem. I read my machines instructions and was able do it on my practice fabric. Now I needed to change thread colors. The tie on method didn't work for me so I decided to thread from scratch. I read my manual and watched the video, followed all of the instructions and thought I had done it right, but the thread broke and so did the needle. Then I remembered the book had mentioned broken thread and needles and so I went right to the chapter. There was the answer. "The lower looper thread must overlap the upper looper thread otherwise the thread will break every time". Why didn't the manual or the video mention this? If I never learn another thing, that little gem of advice was worth the price, but the book is full of all the information I need. It has a place of honor on a shelf above my sewing table and will be there for years to come. If you are a newbee like me, buy this book. You won't regret it.
