Scrappy Little Nobody, by Anna Kendrick

A collection of humorous autobiographical essays by the Academy Award-nominated actress and star of Up in the Air and Pitch Perfect.

Even before she made a name for herself on the silver screen starring in films like Pitch Perfect, Up in the Air, Twilight, and Into the Woods, Anna Kendrick was unusually small, weird, and “10 percent defiant.”

At the ripe age of thirteen, she had already resolved to “keep the crazy inside my head where it belonged. Forever. But here’s the thing about crazy: It. Wants. Out.” In Scrappy Little Nobody, she invites readers inside her brain, sharing extraordinary and charmingly ordinary stories with candor and winningly wry observations.

With her razor-sharp wit, Anna recounts the absurdities she’s experienced on her way to and from the heart of pop culture as only she can—from her unusual path to the performing arts (Vanilla Ice and baggy neon pants may have played a role) to her double life as a middle-school student who also starred on Broadway to her initial “dating experiments” (including only liking boys who didn’t like her back) to reviewing a binder full of butt doubles to her struggle to live like an adult woman instead of a perpetual “man-child.”

Enter Anna’s world and follow her rise from “scrappy little nobody” to somebody who dazzles on the stage, the screen, and now the page—with an electric, singular voice, at once familiar and surprising, sharp and sweet, funny and serious (well, not that serious).

Review
"This A list firecracker does it all—blockbusters, indies, dramas, musicals, and, now, a memoir—with sleight of hand dexterity and fearsome wit. . . . Scrappy Little Nobody is a fizzy, funny collection of personal essays that very successfully approximates what it’s like to spend time with Kendrick (long a Twitter fave, now to more than 5 million) and, as such, seems likely to have extremely widespread appeal." —ELLE

"Scrappy Little Nobody lets readers feel like they have spent an afternoon chatting with their closest friend." —Booklist

"Kendrick has won legions of fans for her movies and her quips on Twitter, and her wit continues in this collection of autobiographical essays recounting some of the most memorable, charming, and even relatable moments of her life—from growing up in New England suburbia to working her way up to become one of Hollywood’s darlings." —Buzzfeed

“[Kendrick] writes an honest, effortlessly funny and alternatively relatable and aspirational reflection on her personal and professional life to date. Her essays jump from grade school reminiscences to Louis Vuitton Oscar parties to the typical highs and lows of adult dating life, revealing the witty, talented and disarmingly real girl behind the Hollywood name.” —Harper’s Bazaar

“The Pitch Perfect star can sing, act, and write hilarious tweets. Fortunately she’s imbued the pieces in Scrappy Little Nobody with that same humor.” —Entertainment Weekly

“This collection of essays about the life of everyone's favorite actress Anna Kendrick will have you laughing for days. After all, this is the woman who could even make Twilight funny.” —Bustle

Anna Kendrick - just like I'd hoped she'd be
By Dr. J
Scrappy Little Nobody was such a great relief from the terrible Monday - one week post 2016 election, Gwen Ifill died, a heinous incident with a smelly towel- I was having when it magically arrived in my Kindle that I almost cried. Luckily, however, the Effexor and Xanax did its job, and I just grinned a little and completely abandoned the Important Thoughtful Book I was reading for work.
Kendrick's straightforward narrative of her life since deciding she was destined to be an actor at the age of 8 is a breath of fresh air and plenty feisty. Kendrick touts herself as an anxiety-ridden, somewhat bumbling, always skeptical misanthrope, but rather than coming off as affected or bitchy, the tone works. She really DOES seem like a frothy little ball of prickles, an existence with which I can quite readily identify (and with which most who know me will agree - just ask my kids, husband, family members, students and friends). I love her for this. I love her for being able to share some poignant moments (like the death of her gramma) without becoming maudlin or overwrought, and I love how she owns up to drinking vodka and smoking pot. It's refreshing after sifting through all the Gwyneth Paltrow type perfectionista stars. Instead of launching a lifestyle brand, Kendrick creates imaginary parties in her head and freaks out about the possibility of having to make small talk with the neighbors.
Although there were points at which I wondered briefly whether the whole self-deprecating approach was a bit too much, and although I know she can't possibly still have an ikea twin bed in a rundown apartment that has grilles on the windows, I couldn't help setting those concerns aside. All in all, I appreciated Kendrick's throwing open the drapes, at least in one room, on her shortcomings and fears of not fitting in; I also appreciated that she made lists for herself to remind herself of what she should be doing in order to be seen as normal.
Don't even sink to normal, Anna! Always be the rattled little ferret with her back against the wall that we know you to be. And also, I hope you really are already seeing a therapist, cuz there's a lot going on over there in that miniature skull of yours.

Scrappy Little Masterpiece
By Stacey Frazier
Having read this charming book of autobiographical essays in one sitting, I literally couldn't put it down. Anna is self deprecating in her telling of some of the most poignant experiences of her life, but comes across with her usual sarcasm that's surprisingly relatable. Getting into her head, as she puts it is a dark place because the "crazy" wants out. It does get out and is hilarious as she stumbles through life evolving from a child star on Broadway to an A-list celebrity who's taking Hollywood by storm. Her coming of age stories including her sexual exploits with boys to her admission of alcohol and marijuana indulgence is some of the most honest and entertaining parts of this little gem. Then she shifts gears with the telling of her struggles with poverty to the death of her grandmother which reminds us that underneath her success, she's a human being who experiences hardships like the rest of us. After finishing this book I purchased the audio version where Anna belts out the stories with enthusiasm, letting her personality shine and found myself falling more in love with this book. Anna is a force to be reckoned with who's considered a triple threat with her effortless ability to act, sing and dance. Add published author to her professional portfolio and you have an extremely talented individual who's written one hell of a book.

Exactly what I would have expected
By Mike Fennessy
In interviews and on social media, Anna Kendrick comes across as a down to earth actual human being whom just happens to be famous. It was nice to read a memoir (if that term actually describes this book) confirming what I had hoped. She is an actress that I enjoy watching and I guess I can now say that she is an author I enjoy reading. I look forward to seeing what else she can do.
