Read this in the nick of time

I can't stand marketing, branding, advertising, "how-to" and "seven principles" type books. Can't get past page 3 of any of them. I found this one quite by accident, and couldn't put it down. Just when I was doubting my ability to cope in my "creative" position at a non-creative corporation, I found this book. It breathed new wind in my sails, and changed my mind about a few things. Isn't that enough? After reading this book, I decided that books like this are all I really need. Books by people who tell stories about their creative pursuits. Not books by people who preach theories and trends, and even insert those awful charts and graphs. Real stories by real people who really did something risky. Thanks for this one, Mr. MacLeod.

Good, funny, inspiring

I really enjoyed this book--it's sectioned so you can read it cover to cover, or just pick it up and read a small, short section (which is how I do it now that I've read it cover to cover. It lives on my coffee table, and I pick it up a few moments before heading off to bed.
The author is self-deprecating, honest, and really made good points. He kept his day job, and continued to sell his small cards and ideas, which is sort of how I'm doing it--I haven't sold anything over $20, but I sell consistently, (on an internet auction site) and have a career and day job (usually, if not currently.) I would LOVE to be making a million dollars a year, but I'm happy making anywhere from $200 to $2000, and maybe someday--in the mean time, I have a day job. This is the advice the author gives--whatever it is you do, do it, but don't stop doing the thing you do for money.
The myth of leap and the net appears seems to leave lots of people flattened on the pavement (that was me, a few decades ago.)
I found it well-written, and I started sharing bits of it with my hubby (who's a day to day office guy, but also plays guitar, so he's creative in his own time, but earns a paycheck.)
personally, I think the world needs more of this realistic advice--there's enough Steve Jobs/Ted talk type folks telling you to leap and believe, but sometimes, despite believing and making a commitment, the world just isn't willing or ready to hand you a suitcase full of money--in the meantime, hone your craft, and enjoy doing what you do, without the stress of needing to sell, needing to make a big splash, because that stress is a creativity killer.
Loaded with great doodles, and funny cartoons, but a treat to read, also.

Great BOOK!

This book was absolutely awesome if you are looking for an easy read. It is very helpful when trying to look at success in a different manner when figuring out what you would like to do with your life. This author uses creativity in ways to describe how a person should build success. Hugh MacLeod uses sense of humor and witty experiences to shape his idea of enriching and simplifying ways to achieve ones goals. Although at times it is a little biased and not maybe suited for everyone, his thought of finding a dream and ways of reaching that dream is very helpful. Every few pages were a different thought that always kept the reader intrigues. His ideas were somewhat scrambled but usually would explain things on a clear level. This book would be great to give to someone who is about to go on a long plane flight or taking a drive on the open road. It took me only a couple hours to complete the entire book because it flowed very well with his overall concept. I loved that he embraces using technology in getting yourself out there that is how he came across publishing his book by writing a blog. This book kind of reminded me of Carrie Bradshaw and how her articles turned into a book however Hugh MacLeod bases his experiences on life no other things.
